I hesitated before creating this thread. I used to really like Molly Wizenburg, even bought her book, but somehow I find her style slightly pretentious now. Even her book read exactly like the blog and was a little disappointing. It's also a bit annoying now that all she does is make other people's recipes. Also, she's friends with the contemptible Shauna Ahern, and that gives me pause.

I was sort of iffy when I saw a thread started about Molly, because I really like her and she's definitely SOMI for me. But I think all your complaints are my complaints. I always found her a little bit hard to relate to, even though she has had her struggles. I don't mind her remaking recipes though because a lot of bloggers do that.

I also am baffled why so many bloggers are BFFs with GFG. Makes me wonder if 1. she's way better in real life or 2. they're fake friendships. It's weird.

This.  I've had the same thought, but I don't really understand how 1. could be true, though.  I mean, why would you want to project a worse version of yourself onto the internet?  And maybe they are fake friendships.  But what on earth could Yes!Breathe!Shauna have to offer anyone in terms of street cred, or whatever, that would make someone want to pretend to be friends with her?!  The mind boggles.

I think Shauna officiated at their wedding? Can't be a fake friendship I guess? Maybe she is better in real life but watching her antics online has to make one reevaluate a friendship.

I have to say, I don't hate Orangette. I'll probably even buy her new book. But honestly, she hung out at a writer retreat place so she could catch up on New Yorker? Annoyed me a little.

Yeah, they seem to have a charmed life. I think that happens with a lot of bloggers who blog about their lives, we only see good stuff most of the time. I wish I've been to Paris multiple times… But I do have to WK for that retreat, because unlike some bloggers Molly seems like she works her ass off and a vacation was probably very deserved.

I have to echo the above sentiments. I recently finally removed Orangette from my bookmarked food blog list. I realized that I'd stopped reading her quite a long time ago but never could put my finger on why. She's not a GOMI for me by any means, but . . . shrug.

As for her friendship with Shauna, I wonder if it is due to the fact that years ago there weren't all that many Seattle-based food bloggers, so the few that existed at that time buddied up with each other. Now that GFG has moved to Vashon, she probably only visits Molly in Seattle to score a free meal for her family at Delancey–gluten-free, of course! At least one time that I remember, Shauna brought her own gluten-free dough so Brandon would make a special snowflake pizza for her.  rolleyes

What I don't like about GFG is the same thing I don't like about Orangette:  false modesty and that fake authenticity (fauxthenticity?)

They think that by writing in that precious, "you see" voice that they're being lovely and delightful.

They're not.  They're just annoying and ugly on the inside.

yeah I don't think she mentions the Aherns that much these days. At least not on her blog or or social media.

I really like her podcast called Spilled Milk. It is very funny and completely different than her Orangette voice more down to earth and irreverent. . It's a pity she doesn't share that side of herself on her blog.

Maybe Molly is friends with Shauna in the same way I suspect Sharon was friends with her for so long: obligation out of a sense of pity. Somebody in the GFG thread said that pretty much everybody jumped ship and doesn't return Shauna's communication attempts. So maybe Molly felt bad and continued the friendship open. However, I do recall Shauna talking shit about Molly's baby shower on her blog.

IIRC, just snarking on the food served and such. I wish I could find the post because the thread this was originally snarked on has disappeared into the ether.

I thought it was just the opposite, actually? Unless she wrote something on her blog that contradicted this…
