I never check her site, but I follow her on Facebook, and I saw she posted about a slow cooker chicken tortilla soup recipe.  I made it, and so did two of my friends and we all thought it lacked something.  I know a lot of her recipes are like that, but this was super bad.  Like, none of us can pin down what it's missing.  It's weird.

I made it too and it wasn't good at all. So sad because that day chicken tortilla soup sounded so good!

It was such a bummer!  I felt like I had to redeem my life and make a better version, so I made this last night, and it is perfect:

Bookmarking, it's been soup weather in our neck of the woods and I could do with trying a new recipe!

I know a few people IRL who are way into her, her recipes, etc. I just can't stand her fake "aw shucks" thing.

Just curious – did her sister Betsy get divorced? I haven't seen any mention of her husband in a long time.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen it referenced in one of her posts.

Her soups have always been kinda meh for me, but I can highly recommend her spinach dip recipe.  I like non-mayo spin dip better than the mayo based kind and as much as her blank stare and creepy smile freak me out, that dip is freakin good.

They have started to show her programme in the UK, caught a bit where a daughter was looking after the bulls and saying how the feed had been enhanced  with "nutrients" to fatten the animals up over the summer. Whereas said nutrients ie growth hormones and antibiotics are banned here!

Sad how much disregard for animal welfare is normalised.

I love spinach artichoke dip but have always used the sour cream/mayo/etc recipes.  I recently tried hers, and I agree it was awesome.  embarrassed And I am not generally a fan of PW.

This weekend I didn't have any milk but wanted to make pancakes, and google showed her recipe (well not her recipe but her Aunt Emma I think) for pancakes using sour cream and only 7 tablespoons of flour.  I was intrigued…  I liked them and that you didn't need a nap immediately after eating them, but flipping them was like trying to flip a snowflake.  In the end, my husband was like "can you make the normal pancakes next time?"…

giogha, I live in the EU now but am returning to the US soon.  One of my top concerns is the food supply I'm returning to.  I had stopped eating meat in the US before I moved to Europe and gradually re-introduced it because I feel so much better about the treatment over here.  hijacked

Americans are addicted to cheap meat prices. Based on my experience (family and friends are in the beef biz), their cattle operation is typical. Farmers that operate on that scale are focused solely on the bottom line and a pound or two means the difference between making or losing money. I stopped buying and eating large scale beef years ago and now buy it from a local farmer who adds nothing unnecessary to the process of raising the animal to butchering weight.

I went from being a fan of her site in the early years to rolling my eyes at it later on. I still stop by once in a while. However, compared to so many other blogs that lost steam and direction over the years, I think I have to give her some credit for being shrewd and smart.

Didn't Smitten Kitchen visit The Ranch once? Neither of them list the other on their links/good reads section. I'm sure it's nothing, but I'm giggling at the idea of a food blogger Mean Girls WAR! (Deb is so lovely and even though Ree can grate, she seems pretty harmless.)

What's worth mentioning is Deb was heavily pregnant and really didn't want to be photographed. Or at least not blogged.
I'm not sure if it was this batch or another, but one blogger showed up with head-lice, which totally squicks me out.

I remember years ago someone had a bad experience at the ranch, but I can't remember which blogger.  I'm getting my early dementia diagnosis any day now.

I was just looking at her mercantile pictures.  I'm wondering if she's taking a page from the Gaines playbook and capitalizing on star status by making it a destination sort of stop like the silos.  She has so many projects- the blog, the cookbooks, the tv show, the Walmart line, the mercantile, she must have a whole team working for her.

There was some blogger who visited the Ranch many years ago with some other folks. One thing I recall about it is that Ree served scrambled eggs for breakfast for all of them. She served them basically one egg each and not much else, which left them all starving. I'll be damned if I can find that post now.
