It's been a while so the details are a little fuzzy but I think the old owner was accepting donations & using advertising to help run FJ. She claimed she was working like 40+ (maybe more) hours a week to run the board & the advertising wasn't enough to cover all expenses, hence the request for donations.  She then proceeded to buy herself a new laptop as well as compensate herself for the hours she spent "working" on FJ. If I remember correctly  it didn't appear much, if any, of the money or her time was actually being used to improve the board. She also attempted to make FJ a LLC in order run some other blogs/boards under the FJ umbrella. It was all pretty shady. Curious (the current owner) & some other mods became suspicious & confronted her. The old owner tried to defend herself but after being called out by nearly everyone she finally handed the board over to Curious.

During this drama another issue came to light. The old owner and some long time members/moderators had a secret Facebook group. They were using it to discuss FJ business as well as talk smack about other members. Basically, it was a high school clique & some FJers who weren't invited became irate about it. When the existence of the Facebook group was exposed most of the clique members left FJ. I know there is probably more to the story but I can't recall it. Maybe one of the old members on here can add something.

You've got it pretty accurate. And there has never been an accounting or good explanation of where the money that the first owner, Alecto, went to. Maybe it went to pay for the bus-humping trip.

Did you know FJ was once talking about forming as a non-profit 501c (3) organization? I laughed my ass off about that one. I'm all like, "exactly what services do you provide that would qualify you as a charitable organization?" That was some seriously delusional thinking there, but a lot of them there thinking they are saving the world from fundamentalism by making fun of women's dresses and stalking Josh Duggar's Instagram. idontknow

Oh, they still talk about becoming a nonprofit. I agree the delusion about FJ's contributions to the world is hilarious. That's how so many of them were convinced to give money to Razing Ruth. She preyed on their desire to free some poor, oppressed fundie girl. FJ has a hard time accepting it is just a snark/gossip site.

One of their members was giving the rr scammer $500 to $1000 donations at a time. Like, who does that? Why? What would possess you? I remember when that whole thing came out, and the higher ups were all "we didn't encourage anyone to donate, we didn't discourage people asking questions about the veracity of the blog…" And it was such bullshit. Anytime anyone questioned Ruth's bullshit story, they were essentially shouted off of the board. There was one woman who actually showed up with some form of evidence that the blog was fake, I don't remember what exactly it was, it may have just been a record of the inconsistencies that were pretty f**king evident if you bothered to read, and she was name called and piled on and chased to another blog, it was pretty brutal, and that treatment was par for the course of you questioned rr. They fostered a community that was ripe to be scammed, it wasn't a question of if, but when, and that's really what's wrong with the board in a nutshell. It's supposed to be this free thinking exchange of ideas, but in reality, it's the same seven ideas and a whole lot of back patting about how enlightened everyone is.

As for the board becoming a non profit, I remember that, and it was incredibly stupid. Non profit serving whom? Rescued adults who have different beliefs than you do? Like, what? Those fools couldn't even manage ads on their website without seven thousand posts of hand wringing. Who exactly are they qualified to help?

Further, Happy Atheist, I know you're reading this, you're a giant asshole. I wouldn't allow you to moderate a discussion between houseplants, you aren't a funny curmudgeon, you're just a sad woman who lacks basic social skills.

They are SO desperate for the Duggars to slip.  It's a little ridiculous.  I'm in the camp of "one of them will break free and write a tell-all in 10 years" but ffs, I have better things to do than pick apart every tiny detail I see on a heavily-edited reality TV show that's not even all that interesting anyway.

Arise Chicken, thank you for the story!

bandwagonbandwagon to the comments on Happy Atheist.

I can't really snark on them for how much they obsess over 19 Kids and Counting, given how much we pay attention to what part of her shoulder KERF has photoshopped, but I will say that they think they're saving the world from fundies and doing a service to us all.

There are some seriously deluded people at FJ, but I still read there sometimes to keep up with the Duggar snark. But then they'll go off on this million page tangent on the Civil War or Harry Potter and they get to be very seriously boring.

I think the Duggars are interesting hypocrites and I like discussing them and their perverted child fondling cult leader Bill Gothard, but I don't hate them.
Some of those people at Free Jinger HATE the Duggars personally and I just don't get that.
