newhere So glad I found this thread. I've been lurking over there for a long time but in the past couple of months it's turned into more of a hate-read. (Naturally I still can't bring myself to stop reading!) It's surprising to me how they manage to be so active and outlandish with so little pushback from within their own ranks. So they've basically got a cycle going like this:

1) Someone identifies a super-sheltered homeschooled teenager who uses her blog to keep in touch with her 5 friends, and finds something ridiculous on it.
2) People put together ten pages of comments about her grammar, her appearance, and her wardrobe, and then move into speculation about her marriage prospects, her family's finances, and her mother's health. If she's lucky, someone will give her an unfunny nickname.
3) Optional, but increasingly common: someone looks up her address, her relatives' court records, and her father's place of employment, and posts this info. Someone else contemplates calling CPS on the family after seeing an instagram post and doing some mind-reading.
4) Our small-time blogger notices that she is getting hundreds of hits and discovers the thread. Since her parents already have her primed to believe that the world is a dangerous place and everyone is out to get her, she freaks out way harder than a regular person would at the discovery that her personal life is gossip fodder on the internet. She deletes her blog and writes a bewildered post on her private facebook.
5) FJ has obviously already infiltrated her facebook, and everyone starts high-fiving about how they bagged another one. Some bigwig poster gets up on the high horse to explain that what we are doing does not meet the legal definition of harassment and is therefore right and good. A warning is issued that if you can't take the heat, you shouldn't be on the internet in the first place. Everyone agrees and the cycle continues.

Ughh it drives me nuts but I've never commented and I know I would be shouted out of the room if my first comment was a dissent. Right now they are going nuts over the fact that one of the Maxwell kids got married to a girl with no internet presence and they kept the details of the ceremony private until after the fact. So many conspiracy theories about what kind of shady business must be going on that they wouldn't put more details online. So many people digging up and posting a creepy level of info on people who have obviously taken great care to not expose themselves to the internet. Duh, you have been telling people for years that you will snark and bother and show up in person to anything that is posted online. Sounds like they're finally taking your advice, and you can't handle it. Someone pointed this out in one of the mega-threads and all of the old-time posters are predictably piling on.

Phew, I didn't realize I had so much on my chest.

Yes bromeliad!  I like it sometimes, but it really squicks me out how some of their members stalk and comment on fundie blogs. Like poking a bear in a cage.

The Maxwell dad is just as creepy as they all think he is, but I think FJ just ramps him up and makes it worse. There is no need for them to comment with juvenile names on his blog and then come back and tee-hee all over the forums.

bromeliad, I've been rolling my eyes at the Maxwell marriage thread for days but had to leave it after the pile on of the dissenting poster. I became pissed off when the board's owner started backing up the crazy & downplayed the creepiness of some members' past actions. The self-justification on the board is maddening!

Believe me, I understand! I'm still ashamed of my days at Free Jinger. For whatever reason they always put the most delusional, power-hungry ego maniacs in their administration. Woe to whomever voices dissent!

They do nothing to truly help those who are stuck in fundamentalism, they actually make it worse by making the "other side" look like a bunch of assholes. And some people there are downright addicted to the self-congratulatory negative nonsense that goes on there, I've seen it. It's a dark place.

The Maxwell wedding thread really made me roll my eyes, too.  They go on about how it's all public information.  True, but they scour Google and every source they can find so they can publish the woman's full name, as well as the names of her parents, sisters, and cousins.  THAT is why people say "stalking" and "creepy."  Yeah, it's not stalking in the legal sense, but I'm sure it is extremely creepy for the Maxwells, Duggars, etc.  The cousins in particular may have nothing whatsoever to do with the fundie lifestyle, and yet, FJ members post links to their FB pages.  I would absolutely find that creepy, if someone posted that info about me or my family.

I do think the Maxwells are cult-like and that Steve in particular is a creep, but I can't blame them for keeping the marriage hush-hush until afterwards.  After the FJ wedding gifts and visits and whatnot, who the f**k can blame them?

It's like the members think that the purpose of the site is all high and mighty ~exposing fundies for who they really are~ but at its heart, the main focus is petty snark.  And that's fine, but own it.  Don't play the self-righteous holier-than-thou card about how your purpose is to expose the harmful patriarchal trends in religious fundamentalists when what you really get off on doing is snarking clothing/hair/appearances/houses, obsessing over Josh Duggar's instagram for thousands of posts, and over-analyzing things to the point that you have a 10 page thread explode from a single photograph.

It has definitely become a hate-read for me, too.

Can you imagine the pearl clutching if a fundie acted the same way to one of the members? They were indignant enough when another FJer was detained by the police after she advertised she was going to attend a Duggar event. They had a hard time understanding why the Duggars weren't enthralled with the idea of their children being secretly recorded.

This! And bandwagon to bromeliad, too. The ardent FJ members are just as self-righteous as the people they claim to disdain, and for as much as they seem to live pointing out hypocrisy, they can't see their own.

Holy mackerel, gang! It's hockey season!

I fucking love scien

Doxxing a teenage girl? Way to hit a new low, FJ.

FJers want so bad to be the fundie Anonymous…. But at least some segments of Anonymous do some good, other than tormenting people online and ordering pizzas and having them sent to people's houses, and subscribing them to porn mags. FJ contributes nothing other than stalking and harassing people (and humping buses) including children and teenagers. I honestly think they've made it that much harder for Duggars, Bates, Maxwell, and other fundie kids to break free. Because where else are they going to find help?

What really gets me is that, as far as I know, none of the bigwigs are former fundies. I'm pretty sure Curious (or, while we're on the subject of rude and unfunny nicknames, c**tious) isn't. None of the bus humpers were. Alecto doesn't seem to have been. They're literally bullying people for being different, and they don't seem to care if the latest victim is an adult who willingly joined or a brainwashed child.

This is what kills me. They are dealing with people who are already willing to dangerously isolate their children because they fear that shadowy forces are trying to corrupt them and convert them to atheism. So FJ responds by… being super creepy all over their blogs, showing up to their events to say "we're watching you!" etc? You have to seriously lacking in insight and self-awareness if you can't see how that's feeding the paranoia and isolation. If your stated goal is to help people leave these churches, that's the absolutely wrong way to go about it.

And Speckled Bear and Kite Satan, it's absolutely ludicrous how so many folks who have never had any real world interaction with tthe people they snark on think they will be the ones to "expose" the movement. When the Maxwell kid was previously engaged a lot of people thought tried to contact his fiancee to "warn" her about what she was getting into. The fact that you are obsessed with his public blog does not put you in a position to tell his &$#% fiancee what he's "really" like.

I was a reader and somewhat poster in the Yuku days. Followed the board to one platform, on and off, then another, and then stopped reading (before the "Truth about Ruth" threads started).

When people decided to go rogue and hit up fundie events, thought, "Ok, this is going too far." When Aletco absconded with the funds, helped with getting the forum out of her hands, turns out Aletco didn't get ownership from the previous Yuku owner. Butterfly something? Star something? Can't remember the original board owner's name all these years later.

Butterfly Chica. And am I the only one who found it shady as hell that Alecto specifically handed the board over to Curious? How convienent for Curious, eh?

That was her name; thanks. I think Curious is legit; IIRC when Alecto fell off the map, posters were concerned about ownership and Curious stepped up to find out how to wrest the admin stuff of its current board and Yuku archives after some dissension amongst the ranks. My memory is hazy; think she and several other long-time posters tried to contact Alecto and did not hear back for a while and then she did an Admin flounce and turned it over.

I remember a lot of dissension amongst the ranks when this happened, when the secret FB group was brought to light, and when there was a mass exodus (no pun intended) of some of the long-time posters from the Yuku days. There were some great posters from the Yuku days that had funny and insightful posts. Then it seemed people became over-invested, especially under the Alecto admin-ship. That seems to have set the tone, as it were.

SonYouGotAPantyOnYourHead (awesome name), that sounds about right. I would argue the interactions with fundies began under & were encouraged by Alecto, though. I think one member snuck into Rebecca Serven's wedding ceremony & another attended a Maxwell conference & signed her name as "Ginger Freeah" on a picture given to the family. Alecto was one of the group who attended a Maxwell conference, yelled at Steve Maxwell, & humped their bus. The interactions have been slowly escalating since the Yuku days with administration approval.
