I. Love. This. Show.
It's just the right time for something like this – I never watched Parenthood (but maybe I should start? Is it on Hulu or Netflix?) and I just have been craving a good well-done family-centric show….
I read that the next show picks up 8 years from now (for the parents) and that "their marriage is in a very different place". This makes me sooooo sad I hope it doesn't go south :(
But then the article said that the third episode goes back to just after the hospital and the kids were born and it kind of keeps jumping around…even before Mandy was pregnant.
I'm so looking forward to it and hope it doesn't tank!!!!

I have a feeling it will jump around each episode to tie in with whatever the twins and the other brother are going through. So maybe in the next episode the parents are going through a hard time in their relationship and it will tie in with the adopted brother (cannot remember his name) having issues with his wife now that his bio dad is in the picture… and Kate having a new relationship etc… Does that make sense?

Oh no for sure it makes sense – I guess what I meant is that I love Milo/Mandy's vibe and even though I'm married and I know people go through things, I just hope for the best for them haha (as if I personally know these fictional characters lol)

YES 100%, I am assuming they are both dead in real time which kind of makes me sad but had to be done since Milo cant really be Justin Hartleys dad. HA.

I didn't make me cry like I was hoping for and I also rolled my eyes at using 9 crimes during an emotional scene (#greysdiditfirst)

I didn't pick up on the twist at all and ended up loving that. At first I thought oh look he's going to adopt this baby just like the other dude is adopted. Parallel story lines. Then I saw the cigarette and was like OH! Super cool

Being from Pittsburgh, I had to google why the opening scene had a terrible towel on the Guys junk. I didn't know that the couple lis going to live in Pittsburgh which is cool I hope the city plays a part. Anyway, when the doc was in the hallway talking to the dad I kept thinking "this is a poor example of Pittsburgh hospitals. Even the out lying ones are better that this dump. Why isn't he taking him into a private room?! UPMC must be pissed" so that train of thought may be why1. I didn't cry at the talk and 2. What my clue to the twist should have been.

I did not see the twist coming, though like you cats, I'm usually really quick to spot that stuff coming. I'm glad though, because it was just perfect!

While I knew the whole birthing scene was "off", I just chalked that up to the fact that tv never gets births very accurate. They always make me roll my eyes with how insane and far from realistic they are. So that did not tip me off at all that it was an era/time thing. Remember Phoebe having triplets on Friends? lmao

I'm wondering if the dad that was found is maybe not the real dad. Maybe he's just playing along for handouts. How in the world would he have been able to be found anyway? The baby couldn't have had a birth certificate, right? He was a newborn left abandoned. Seems like a stretch to me.

What is that guys' name? Twins are Kate and Kevin, the third one is ____???

The OB was the BEST. I watched the show over again and his words to Milo about how he will still be bringing home three babies, but it might not look the way he expected — Wah! So sweet! cry

I also did not see the twist coming.  I never ever would have noticed the "off things" in the birthing scene.  Then again, I'm childless, so girl could have been birthing in a cave, squatting over a bucket and I still would have been like- "yeah! That's totally how they do it now. This show is accurate."  The only time I've even been slightly suspicious of an OB office is the one time I went to Planned Parenthood in downtown Baltimore in a rush to get my BC filled, and the stirrups on the exam table had oven mits on them instead of feet padding.  That was glaring enough to tell me something wasn't right.

Also, Milo's butt like 5 seconds in to the show was a really tricky thing to do, to get viewers to continue to watch.  I'm on to you This is Us show producers!

I LOVED the twist! I also didn't see it coming- I just assumed this was a series that had some small connections/parallel stories, that kind of thing so I wasn't even trying that hard to make a connection- when the guy offered his a cigarette I was like WTF? And then he lit up and I was like REALLY WTF then saw the pan out and cried a little. That was great. I need something to fill my Parenthood void- so really hope this delivers!

To the person who asked if they should watch Parenthood- YES YES YES. It is all on Netflix :)

Man, I LOVED Major Dad SOOO MUCH as a kid

I love that the big tip off were how much improved/glossy obstetric care has gotten.

It'll be really cool to see how they mesh Mandy/Milo with the kids story.

Minor critique- Mandy Moore always plays things 0.5% too earnest- grates on me a little

Wait, was it supposed to be a twist that the parents are in the '70s/early '80s in the beginning? I didn't think so, because they showed the date on the box, the "terrible towel" was a '70s thing, and Mandy Moore said in an interview that she was in flashback scenes primarily throughout the '70s and '80s… I didn't think that was a secret! The twist for me was that the adopted guy was one of the "triplets" (loved that!).

Questions/Commentary:

Kate said, "I always wanted to be a mom like Mom and marry a husband like Dad" or something to that effect, so I don't think they have a doomed marriage; sounds like they were a good couple, at least in the eyes of their kids.

No mention of Mom and Dad on their birthday, so can we assume they're dead? If so, that's pretty young to be gone, right?

Black triplet's name is Randall. Can we presume he is not close to this siblings, as they didn't have so much as a happy birthday call or exchange together? Maybe they had a falling out? Although there was the picture of the three of them in Kate's apartment…

Seems like the babies were born in Pittsburgh, but both Kevin and Kate are now in L.A. Is Randall in L.A. too or NYC?

Randall had an e-mail from Kevin in his inbox saying "hey, it's our birthday!" or something like that. I'm guessing they just didn't show the three interacting or Randal talking about his twin siblings to keep up surprise until the end.

Yes that's a good point I forgot Kate's commentary about her parents – that makes me happy :)

And as for Randall's relationship with his brother and sister – the article I read (interview with the director/writer) it's confirmed he has a very close relationship with them, which we will see. He stayed back east in PA to stay close to the parents (maybe they got sick???) and the other two moved to LA. They also said that we will see that the two "brothers" have a very tumultuous relationship…

Also to the ham that mentioned it – the terrible towel may have started back then, but is still very very common today (huscat is from PA), so I didn't see that as a red flag at all. And it still looks the same.

I realized the twist once we saw Kate and Manny were sibs – well, not the adopted brother part. But I knew MM and Milo wasn't current pretty early on because I'm a maternity nurse, ha! But that didn't take away my enjoyment of the show … I loved it. Are Mandy and Milo regular cast members or, like, recurring/guest spots? If the show loses those two, I might lose interest. But overall, an incredible premiere – I'm about to watch it again with my husband! He knows there's a twist from the Internet, so it'll be interesting to see if he picks up on it given he expects a shock.

ETA: am rewatching right now and realized they show Kate and Kevin are siblings on the first few min of the show. I missed that the first time! Not that anyone cares, but I assure you I'm not some evil genius who figured out the twist in the opening minutes.
