I couldn't find the old thread.

What is going on with this poor girl?

I know I'm supposed to envy this chick because her body is sick, but yikes, she's spending this week doing apparently doing zero-carb penance for eating birthday cake by asking for extra veggies instead of rice out to dinner, corn chowder with no cream so that she wouldn't feel "gross," a hard boiled egg and some fruit for a snack through teaching and practicing yoga?

Yeah. When people here say that her meals seem balanced and that she eats normally and has a good outlook, I just don't see it.

Her utter fear of non-vegetable carbohydrates + use of the term "skinny fat" awhile back kind of clinched her as side-eye-able for me. I used to like her, but the body obsession is seriously shining through in every post and it's such a turnoff. I feel bad for her, it seems like she's been having a tough time of it for a couple years.

I was wondering if anyone was going to bring up PBR.  I originally found her blog by looking at a SOMI thread on here, and I enjoyed it for a while.  She seemed to have a good outlook and yet be a total badass and someone I could look up to.

Lately, I'm not so sure what has happened to her.  I am automatically very skeptical of anyone who is such a Crossfit devotee.  I had about a year of experience with Crossfit (in the dark, early days), and ended up injured as hell.  I also had trainers repeatedly tell me that vegetarianism was unhealthy, that dehydration symptoms were "just your body detoxing," and that carbohydrates are not a good energy source.

PBR seems caught up in a Crossfit/Paleo downward spiral (just like 80% of the blogiverse).  Also, that recent photo of a single sliced boiled egg and some crushed cubes of watermelon sliding around on a naked plate is just about as depressing as a paper cup full of methadone.

I never thought she was the pinnacle of health. I also never understood why people on GOMI would think she somehow ate so much more/healthier than other HLBers and had an amazing body and exercise regimen. She exercises just as much, if not more, as other HLBers and eats just as little. For f**ks sake, her dinner the other night was a piece of chicken breast and some sauteed vegetables. Yes, some of her stuff sounds more appetizing, but the amount of food she eats for as much as she exercises is ridiculous.

She ate some birthday cake and now needs to "detox" all week. If this were any other blogger they would get slammed.

Also, not trying to body snark, but I don't think her body is something to aspire to. I admire the work she puts in and the dedication she has to fitness, but I think her body looks like it has too low body fat.

Her blog was always boring to me (she never really seemed to have much of a personality) but it's especially so now that she's moved into Crossfit hell.

I have a lot of feels about her, clearly.

Plus it's become more and more apparent that her slavish dedication to her jobs/lifestyle is what may have prompted her divorce.

I used to really love Jen; she was one of those blogger I'd save to read last on my Reader (when I used to slog through CNC and HTP every single day, so glad I took them off my reader).  But now I read her blog and just feel incredibly sad.

I thought her body was SICK a couple of years ago, but now she just looks like she put her body through a Crossfit shredder.

I had never heard of her but checked out her blog. I really don't get the "healthy" part of the healthy living blogger. Every single one of them seems to do nothing but exercise and manically photograph their carbless food then write about their exercise and carbless food. It is so boring to me. Her body fat doesn't seem all that terribly low and she is too bulky for my taste. Clearly her entire social life revolves around the gym and her gym friends, as well (at least, from a 30 minute scan, I could be wrong). Seems like her marriage broke up because all she did was go to the gym? I'm another crossfit/paleo loather.

Sad.

I used to like her blog, but she has lost me in the last year or so.  the "skinny fat" debacle was pretty surprising.  She was bodysnarking hard with that comment (I don't believe she was really concerned that marathon runners might have hyperglycemia or dyslipidemia and I wondered if the comment stemmed from her not having impressive marathon finishes and needing to make herself feel better), so I don't mind saying I think she looks too manly at this point.

I called her out on that in that post. It was ridiculous how she tried to back track and show "concern" for the actual physical issues behind being "skinny fat". Bullshit. She was straight up body shaming (so sorry, not all of us can be 5% body fat and have veins bulging out of our arm muscles) and couldn't even own up to it.

YES.

Yes.

Her backpedal comment, for anyone who didn't follow that post:

 17Jen April 23, 2013 at 10:02 pm

hey guys – let me try to clear this up a bit.

1) my intention certainly was not to judge anyone. my blog, my yoga classes, my crossfit classes = NO JUDGEMENT ZONE. and i am so on board with the idea that something is better than nothing….forever and all time.

2) i TOTALLY 100% agree that running brings stress relief and a sense of achievement and i’m all over that. running is still my #1 exercise therapy when i don’t know what else to do with myself because i’m so stressed or emotional. it feels really good. i will never stop doing it.

3) overall, this is more directed towards those who DO want to lose weight/tone up and are stuck in the cardio trap. it’s not gonna make change happen and i will never change my stance on that.

4) i get that the word skinny fat has negative connotations but it’s a real thing and a medical issue. you might look lean but it means that you have not enough muscle and too much fat and this can commonly be carried more around the belly region. these body types often have a normal BMI but high body fat, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc. these are health issues that should be addressed.

5) i get that not everyone wants to be “ripped” but i am a personal trainer and health enthusiast. i will forever preach the benefits of strength training as a means to longevity and maintaining a healthy, strong body as you age. please read this article from mayo clinic that is just an intro on why women should strength train: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/strength-training/HQ01710.

I LOVE ALL OF YOU! i want to ruffle your feathers a bit. i want you to think. i want you to do what feels good but keep growing, becoming stronger and the best you can be. you have to be happy with you. that’s what counts most at the end of the day.

okay, re: #4. I mean wut. "It's like, an actual medical THING, you guyz!!" I normally find her so reasonable (for a restrictive HLB) but this whole post and the way she handled it makes me think she's just like the rest of them. Just because you are a crossfit/yoga/fitness nut doesn't mean you have magical scientific knowledge on related subjects. "Skinny fat" is a f**king shitty term to use. Someone else pointed out in the comments that if she was actually concerned about the health effects of the "medical" issue she's describing, she would have used the actual medical term for it, "normal weight obesity." There were a lot of good zing responses to her 'concern.'

And the part at the end about wanting to ruffle her readers' feathers and make them think just felt like one more shovelful of dirt as she dug further into her hole of condescension.

She also used to be one of my favorite HLB's until a few months ago. I think she's dealing with depression/anxiety in real life and it just pours out of every blog post she writes now.

Yeah, I've wk'd for her before and still consider her a SOMI but primarily because I think she's at least a little more open about her struggles lately than a lot of bloggers. I will admit she does seem to have fallen a little hard for the Cross-fit bs lately…she used to post a lot more dessert recipes and never mentioned having to "detox" until the last few months. That being said, compare her meals, even now, to a lot of other HLBs (both big-time bloggers like Tina and smaller ones) and there's no comparison…her food almost always looks delicious. I think it's important to note that she seems to still have taste buds (ahem Caitlin HTP and Tina) despite trying to eat healthy

As for the soup/not feeling "gross" comment, I took that as she wanted something not too pungent or heavy before heading to the dentist…I wouldn't want to be stuffed to the gills before getting some cavities filled either

And to be honest, I still think her body's incredible. Everyone has different taste I guess…Though I do think Jen seems to really be struggling emotionally and seeing as she lives in a big city and seems to be comfortable financially, I really wish she'd reach out for professional help rather than just sticking to reading motivational books. I really wish the best for her. She seems genuinely sweet

And here i thought her to be one of the more tolerable bloggers who do CrossFit. I CrossFit, so maybe I'm biased but then again I find most CF bloggers to be intolerable. I think a big part of her participation rests with having it as a part of the gym she manages. She keeps her weight fairly light, and in my mind isn't that obnoxious about it.

So happy this thread is here, while reading through her blog today I thought of how boring she has become. Every post is about Crossfit. Her meals have become so restrictive, vegetables + some sort of lean protein. No carbs, no dessert.

Yeah, she used to seem a lot more balanced, but lately she's been in full-on carb avoidance mode. I asked her about it in a comment after seeing multiple photos of bunless burgers (both in restaurants and at home) and she basically blew it off. NO ONE chooses a bunless burger unless they are carb or gluten restricting. Makes me sad.

uh
