71 Toes/Eyre Family

71 Toes is a Mesa-area Mormon mommy blog run by Shawni Pothier, who is part of the Eyre family (her parents write parenting books). They're a big family and many of their children run blogs (like her sister Charity who has a blog called "Dripping with Passion" which could use its own thread and is a bit cringe worthy but I digress)

I generally really enjoy her blog, her family is so photogenic and she takes amazing pictures, and it's interesting to read about their goings on. She has a daughter with a rare genetic syndrome and it is interesting to read about that as well. However, it gets very "heavenly father" and cluelessly privileged a lot of the time (this especially came out on their "service" trip to India and when she was complaining about having to make decisions while building their very expensive home).

Other notable things: She also shills a lot of her parents books and whatnot. She uses the phrases "boy howdy" and "soaking them up" and "cute friends" excessively haha. Her 9 year old daughter also dressed up as Mitt Romney and apparently idolizes him as well (?!).

Anyone read this blog? Thoughts?

I can't stand her.  Another rich oblivious Mormon mommy trying to be all god-like while soaking up every material good she can…barf.

I used to really enjoy reading this blog a couple years ago when I first discovered it but I'd forgotten about it until now. I'll have to read and see how I feel now.

I'd be interested to know what you think now!

Too many pictures to scroll through.  Just because you took 50 pictures of the sunset doesn't mean you have to post 50 pictures of the sunset.

She's a SOMI for me.  I don't even remember how I found her blog, but I like some of the posts, especially because I have 4 seven and under and I connect with posts about what it was like to have a bunch of littles.  And I appreciate the fact that she isn't ALWAYS saying "cherish the days that they're little" and she says that her stage now is fun too.

I don't so much mind the stuff about the new house (she seems more stressed out about than people like BEB who were like "building a house is so fun").  It's difficult for me to be bitter about it when Dave seems to work pretty hard (like they weren't handed everything because of her parents).

She does push them a bunch, but I wonder if it's not just because she "so darn grateful" for everything they did for her.  And it probably helps finance things like Bear Lake?

I am a LITTLE bothered by the times that she mentions that some of the kids have UTIs or whatever.  But I do wish we could travel and do as much as they do.

Basically, I don't feel smacked over the head by her Mormoness, although I am a bit obsessed.  The local ward is near my house, and I always try to look at the families and see how "normal" they are!

But yeah – her sister Charity and the dripping with passion and "the boy?"  That probably needs it's own forum because it's so spectacularly amazing and serendipitous that the ended up together after he dumped her last year. drool

She is a SOMI for me too! She doesn't come off braggy or preachy to me…and she has some really good ideas for raising a family.

I made a post about her in the somi section. I like her and her blog. I feel like she doesn't try hard but her posts are still good. I don't read her much anymore because I don't relate to her life at all but I still check in every so often.

My bad I should have just posted there (though I did have issues finding it, I found it now)!

She's SOMI for me, but I agree, they are ridiculously sheltered, privileged, and clueless in many ways, but it's usually just something I roll my eyes at. She seems like a great mother and a great person, just a product of the ridiculous religion.

I've been really hating Shawni's commentary about Max lately. She makes it sound all teasy-winky-face whatever, but I roll my eyes whenever she makes comments about his barely-there mustache, his wolf t-shirts, or Crocks. He's a teenager who likes to have some fun with his style. I get a sense that these kids are raised to be very cookie cutter citizens in terms of identity, style, interests, and activities. Max's "ironic" style choices are so mild compared to how many other teenagers dress and express themselves. I sometimes wonder what would happen if one of the kids wanted to do something that wasn't totally vanilla and safe.

Been reading her for years! I actually really like her parenting FAQs, and she does take great pictures and seems to try to be grounded/keep her kids grounded amidst such privilege.

Re: Commentary on Max. It does read a little tongue-in-cheek, and, if possible, show-offy? Like, "Look at my kid being so funny," when all I see is a typical teenager. I don't like it but I don't hate it, it just reminds me how sheltered they are.

She is basically building my dream house, though, so I am paying close attention to their house blog.

I didn't mind the Mitt Romney costume; thought that was humorous. But I HATED when, the same year, her eldest daughter dressed as a "rapper" or maybe just a "black person" since they don't have any of those around.

I recently started reading this blog and, for the most part, I enjoy it.  I do think she tends to sugarcoat things a bit.  Surely their kids occasionally throw a tantrum or don't want to take a seat on the "repentance bench".  While I enjoy reading, I admit I feel like a pretty crappy mom after I do.

The wealth amazes me though-all the travel and the house(s).  How do all these Mormon families get. so. rich?

Most of Shawni's siblings have blogs and I have checked them all out.  They all seem to be wealthy, travel the world, go to expensive colleges, have beautiful, perfect children.

It does get a bit tiresome.  And yet………….I keep reading!
