I used to follow her blog a couple of years ago when she was traveling through SE Asia.  I was planning a similar trip at the time and I was following a lot of the popular travel blogs and really enjoyed reading them.  Once I actually traveled to the region myself I completely lost all respect for the majority of these bloggers.  I was absolutely horrified to see first hand how these kind of privileged idiots with passports behave overseas.  Sure, Adventurous Kate was quite honest about enjoying partying and the backpacker scene, but I don't think you can fully comprehend the impact of this type of thing on the local culture and environment until you see it for yourself.

I don't really see much of a problem with Adventurous Kate using her marketing skills to grow her blog, but she gained a massive amount of followers during her SE Asia trip.  She built her success on the back of a SE Asia party tour so you'll have to forgive me if I have trouble taking her seriously as a travel writer or whatever it is exactly that she claims to be.

The issue of westerners using poor countries as their party playgrounds spreads way beyond the travel blogging world but I would still like a whole load of these travel bloggers to GOMI.  Can you tell I would also like a travel blogger thread?

As a lady traveler around the same age as Kate, I have to say she's a GOMI for me. There's nothing particularly adventurous about her travels, and she provides no useful insight that light internet browsing hasn't already provided.idontknow

I think the lack of activity in this thread says a lot.  Surely someone with 'Entertainer' as the descriptor on their facebook page would inspire more responses, both SOMI and GOMI.

I had to pop back in to snark on the latest recap post though: http://www.adventurouskate.com/ak-monthly-recap-june-2014/.

Highlights

So many highlights.

Getting to explore Croatia for a week with three smart, innovative travel bloggers was incredible. Croatia itself was beautiful and glorious and perfect — but on top of that, we spend our long car rides and nights at wine bars planning, strategizing, and bouncing ideas off each other. It was superb — the intellectual equivalent of going to a spa for a week.

No Honey, I'm pretty sure scoring a free holiday with your friends for a week is just the regular equivalent of going to a spa for a week. But then I'm not a highly intellectual digital nomad entrepreneur so what do I know… dance

hi all. I'm an older than Kate traveler who agrees with a lot said here, but I do still like her. I wish there had been more opportunity for female travelers when I was 26 so I support anyone getting the possibilities out there and noticed. Having said that, I don't relate to the partying and I found her Thailand ping pong post disturbing.

Thanks for the recommendations for some other travel blogs. Going to check them out now.

Yeah, not a fan of 'adventurous' Kate. Anyone who has travelled before can easily figure out everything she writes about.

But that's always been the way with travel writing, hasn't it? Those who read it are too scared/lame/poor/boring to travel while those who travel know it's shit.

I am, I am, I am

Side note: It also helps that Kate screwed the guy who was/is one of the top bloggers in the world in her very early days ;)

But yes, won't deny she has marketing skills and at least she admits that travel blogging is hard word instead of making it sound like some fantastically easy job like a lot of other bloggers.

Source: a gaggle of very tipsy travel bloggers.

This made me laugh. I don't know why the hell she lists herself as "Entertainer" or better yet, "Personality". She has the personality of wet paint in real life.

It's like the British blogger (whose blog is full of sponsored posts…) Pommie Travels listing herself as an "actress" when all she has a few head shots, a lot of bought social media followers and that's about it…

I never understood why "Adventurous Kate" was popular, but I guess the SEO background is the reason. She is so, so dull. I find that a lot of travel bloggers are superficial, repetitive, and not very intelligent, but that can be masked by lots of enthusiasm or gratitude. Kate is so blah and flatline and I'm tired of seeing that side of her face.

Funny that you mention Pommie Travels… I met her years ago when she was starting out and she did not leave any kind of impression. She wasn't rude or anything, just very simplistic. I read her blog posts after that and they were so awful that I had to stop. She is obsessed with traveling in the US (sponsored only of course) and she gets it all wrong. It's so bizarre to see that she has 25,0000 followers and calls herself an actress. The girl is maybe 5 feet tall max, has zero personality, and doesn't have anything striking about her physically. Maybe she is an actress — I have no idea — but I really don't think that's ever going to happen and I'm not even sure why she's trying to go that route, except to avoid working.

I am SO GLAD you said this. I've been trying to put this into words for awhile after having a similar experience and you hit the nail on the head. I enjoy reading travel blogs (although it's so hard to find good ones) before I go on a trip, and there have been a few countries where I was really shocked at the reality vs. what is portrayed on the blogs. So many of these bloggers "live" somewhere cheap like Thailand for months or years and are clearly taking advantage of being privileged foreigners and taking part in the debauchery. Going to some beautiful temples once a week and eating cheap street food doesn't really count as understanding a culture to  me. I side-eye anyone who moves somewhere in SE Asia without ever having a job now.

Add me to the list of people who want a proper travel blogger forum!

She used to be alright – then she went super downhill with her writing as her ego inflated. Now she's self obsessed and always comparing herself to genuinely good writers.

Another (actually talented) travel blogger passed away recently. In her last post she writes, "Many of you know how much I enjoy writing about the darker side of travel. Well, nobody was better at that than Wes."

Like OK… way to make it about yourself?! Gah. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I think she views herself as the head honcho.

Who was the blogger she used to date? Nomadic Matt? I really can't stand her blog. I was curious at first but now I see her posts are all so simplistic. And I agree, she does think she's (one of anyway) the head honchos. I don't think she's doing anything different. What was the deal with her and her vague comments about her fiancé! She said they broke up, ok fine sorry for her that happened, then in a later post she started getting passive agressive about it and then someone was leaving her 'not very friendly' comments! About it!

Edited to say I want a Traveblog forum too

I noticed her comments about breaking up with her fiance too… I would LOVE to know details but I guess she is too #headtravelblogger to share those kind of details. Which is a shame, because readers do love to see different sides to the bloggers they follow. I would be surprised if she has many genuine followers who read all of her posts anymore. I get the impression she just cashes in on her viral posts.
