Are there travel bloggers that you like to follow? From whom you learn travel tips? Who have non-sponsored travel tips?

My huscat's son will be graduating from college soon and then we'll be saving for overseas (non North-American) vacations. Hoping hamcats have recommendations for travel bloggers who know their stuff.

That said, North American travel blogger tips are welcome, too. Travel is travel.

Hi, I'm new! Well, I've been reading GOMI for a while, but finally posting :)

This might be the best resource page out there for planning travel: http://www.legalnomads.com/wds

I think the author refuses any sort of sponsorship on her site, and the writing is excellent (she's a former lawyer). Her BFF's site is also good, http://www.alittleadrift.com/blog

I also really like This Battered Suitcase, but she doesn't have a lot of tips.

Come to think of it, IMO the "good" travel bloggers aren't as good at including practical info (because they're more focused on engaging writing), and the ones full of info are often helpful, but painful to read :/ I'd mention Adventurous Kate as one who can balance both, but I saw she already has some, ahem, fans on other threads…

Ugh sorry there's something wrong with my copy/pasta, I didn't see I'd posted it twice. Sorry for the second link to legalnomads! #imnewhere

This.

You could pretty much just google "travel tips for (x destination)" and eventually hit some semi-decent info without too much effort.  You probably won't find an engaging blog you'd want to read more of without a bit of digging though.

As for SOMI travel blogs, I like http://www.waegook-tom.com/ and http://www.unbravegirl.com/. Neither write a lot of traditional "Top 10 Things to Do in X" kind of posts, but they both come across as funny, engaging and honest to me.  Sally from Unbrave Girl has been back in the US for a while now so she mostly posts random lists and domestic travel stuff, but her archives have loads of posts from her time living in Asia.

Adventurous Kate goes back and forth for me – although I've enjoyed some of her posts lately.

A SOMI for me is Meghan Starr mostly because she writes on interesting destinations that are not on the usual blogger radar. And as far as I know, the blog is not a money-maker for her so it is not full of sponsored posts. She wrote an interesting post on travel blogging here: http://www.meganstarr.com/2015/07/travel-blogging.html

I love travel blogs so I read a ton of them for general inspiration, whether they're good or bad. I find I don't really LOVE many travel bloggers. Some I completely hate, but the majority fall into the "meh" category.

My all-time favorite travel blogger is Life With Luggage. She doesn't post much, but I also follow her on IG and FB and her life seems really interesting without being sponsored or phony. Like someone said above, LWL falls into the writing category instead of the travel tips category. She doesn't do any Top 10 lists but I actually hate those most of the time anyway.

For a long time my favorite travel blogger was Camels and Chocolate, but over the past couple of years her personality has changed a lot and I find myself enjoying her site less and less. She has a part time job but she's on the internet 24/7 — which we all are, but I don't like to hear from anybody that much in a day. Also she loves photos of herself way too much. She hyped up her new redesign (why do blogs "launch" redesigns now???) and it is actually ALL photos of her.

I've always kind of liked Alex in Wanderland. I also like Legal No ads but she doesn't post very frequently.

Ooh Megan Starr reminded me of another one I started reading a couple months ago, Heart My Backpack (http://www.heartmybackpack.com/) She's funny and seems down to earth, was recently in the Stans and has solo traveled to Iran. If there's any blonde out there I'll read, it's HMB. (Alex in W and YoungAdventuress can go eat it.)

There's been some travel talk on the SOMI thread:

http://gomiblog.com/forums/stay-on-my-internets/somi-travel-blogs/

And yes, as I mentioned there, Jodi at Legal Nomads is a treasure. She may not post too frequently, but I can't begin to count the times her archives have served us well during our travels.  (Whistle! Doorstop!) thumbsup

You wouldn't tell from the title but Vegan In Brighton is mostly about vegan travelling, not just about Brighton : http://veganinbrighton.blogspot.de

She's been travelling for most of the year in a van and I love reading everything. But I might be biased because I also got to meet her & her husband and they are lovely.

I also read a German vegan travel blogge (in case some you can read German) whom I like: http://veltenbummler.blogspot.de/

@byob – I like Heart my Backpack too. She has visited a lot of really interesting places. More than just the usual Chiang Mai and Koh Tao. Not that there's anything wrong with those places (I'm sure I would love to got there) but so many other bloggers think they are doing something different when they just go and hang out with other Americans/Australians/Brits there. I think HMB went to some much more unusual place (like Iran, as you said) and actually (crazy I know!) made friends with local people.

Why don't you like Alex in Wanderland? Curious to know what you dislike about that blog. I haven't been reading her so much lately. She is returning to Thailand for a long stretch now- hopefully somewhere more off the beaten path than usual….

I know you weren't asking me and in general I really like A in W, but I can't read her as much lately. Way too sponsored, too much hokey "y'all" talk (which is fine from actual Southerners, but it's a pet peeve of mine when non-Southerners say it). I hope she grows out of that. But here's something I've never been able to get my head around: Alex is real life friends with That Wife. scared
