Why don't you like Alex in Wanderland? Curious to know what you dislike about that blog. I haven't been reading her so much lately. She is returning to Thailand for a long stretch now- hopefully somewhere more off the beaten path than usual….

I know you weren't asking me and in general I really like A in W, but I can't read her as much lately. Way too sponsored, too much hokey "y'all" talk (which is fine from actual Southerners, but it's a pet peeve of mine when non-Southerners say it). I hope she grows out of that. But here's something I've never been able to get my head around: Alex is real life friends with That Wife. scared

Whaaaaaaattttt???? That is a game changer! How do you know that and how is that possible? I thought A in W grew up and went to school in NY and That Wife (ugh!) Utah. I need more details!

And thanks for your reply Besneakered Kerfpony- I guess I'm interested in why anyone doesn't like the blog as I've been feeling a bit off about it lately but couldn't put my finger on it- it used to be one of my most read. I hadn't read it for the last 2 or 3 months or so and there must be a reason for that… I agree with what you said. I think I liked the blog in the early days because she was young, on a budget, travelling was new to her. Now she is more interested in home comforts. She's going back to Thailand and I just really hope she does some more off the beaten path stuff. I don't need to read any more about expat life in Koh Tao. There are a lot of bloggers doing that and she's already done it. IDK- I get why she would want to go back there and don't begrudge her- but I think I've read enough of that blogwise

But that's beside the point- tell me more about her and That Wife. My mind is blown! I obviously have never interacted with either of them (scaredand had to stop read That Wife years ago- I couldn't stand her anymore) but I just can't imagine it!

Lately I've just been skimming over Alex in Wanderland's posts. It seems like she's turned into a "I travel because I blog" type. I don't care to read about how busy you were/how much work you need to catch up on…just post about your trips! But overall I still like her blog.

Two SOMI's for me are:

http://www.asherworldturns.com/

http://www.oneikathetraveller.com/

They're more my style…have jobs, travel when they can (which is still often).

The whole "professional travel blogger" thing is becoming a turn off. Most of the blogs in my feed are those kind but I realize they're just not as like-able and relatable anymore. Kudos to them for making their "passion" into a paying job but the quality in the content just isn't there.

I never quite liked A in W, hard to say why, she always seemed a bit too ditzy and fake, maybe? And there's the whole Koh Tao thing (like the internet needs more blog posts about Thailand), and I agree with missyprissy1, her posts seem to more often than not be 'traveling because I blog' these days.

I like Oneika as well, and expat blogs in general — people who still hold down full-time jobs and are still building careers (that don't involve travel blogging!).

Two more SOMI for me are:

– an excellent writer, she's been living abroad for like 20 years (she's in her 40s now I believe) and is now based in Hanoi after years in Shanghai, Turkey, Ireland, etc.

http://www.tomatokumato.com/ — possibly the best French expat blog out there, IMO. She's from NYC but has been in Paris for something like 8 years, and writes about life in France through the lens of food recipes.

Awhile ago I noticed Alex and Jenna commented on each other's IG photos a lot and mentioned emailing. They are just SO different so I chalked it up to Alex being nice, but then Alex went out of her way to hang out with Jenna in SF when she was there awhile back. I forget exactly when this was but I used to read the TW thread and I remember at the time Jenna was putting some really awful Jenna style things all over the internet. I was upset to see this (probably more than I should have been, admittedly) because Alex was one of my favorite bloggers at the time and Jenna will always be one of my least favorite human beings. I expected Alex to run screaming after meeting her in person (because maybe she really just didn't get how awful Jenna seemed until then?) but one of them put up a photo together (and possibly a blog post if I remember correctly) and they still act like friends. I tried to Google more for you but it seems like this goes back for years, with a bunch of people saying they found A in W from TW, etc.

I can't quote the hamcat who mentioned Camels and Chocolate, but I also used to love her but she cut down her posting a while ago, so I don't visit as often…so when I read on here that she redid her blog I had to check it out.

OH DEAR.

W T F happened to that blog????? Seriously. C&C was one of my favorite travel blogs ever and now it's absolutely CRINGE-worthy. Does she think she's some sort of celebrity? IDGI.

Thanks for the info Besneakered Kerfpony. Wow that is very disappointing on Alex…Jenna is the worst! Maybe she's different in real life or Alex is just too nice to say no. I  doubt it. And I agree with what others have said have said about her blog becoming more about traveling because of blogging.

I hadn't looked at Camels and Chocolate for ages. Woah! So many photos of herself. Her blog is by the same designer as A in W and a bunch of others.

Adventurous Kate goes back and forth for me – although I've enjoyed some of her posts lately.

A SOMI for me is Meghan Starr mostly because she writes on interesting destinations that are not on the usual blogger radar. And as far as I know, the blog is not a money-maker for her so it is not full of sponsored posts. She wrote an interesting post on travel blogging here: http://www.meganstarr.com/2015/07/travel-blogging.html

me too. her posts can be interesting/useful but I find her so insufferable. I was searching some of her old posts on the middle east and on a Jordan post (the trip was sponsored I believe) a commenter wrote: you seemed more adventurous in the past in a totally benign/not mean way and Kate commented "your comment ruined my whole week" rolleyes get over yourself, girl.

bandwagon to heart my backpack. I also love unlocking kiki, and beer time with wagner even though she's a republican and took pictures all over a Regan statue somewhere. Her idol, apparently. I also like Snow in Tromso, blog about a girl living in the Arctic. I know so little about that part of the world and find it really interesting.

^That's my major problem with Adventurous Kate. She isn't adventurous… at all.

Agree about Adventurous Kate- I don't find her very adventurous at all. I occasionally read her blog if she's writing about a place that interests me, but not often. I did feel sorry for her with the fiance thing though.

I've never read Snow in Tromso- that sounds interesting! I've been struggling to come up with blogs that I really want to somi. There are so many travel blogs but most of the ones I read I don't read regularly. I actually like Nomadic Matt. I don't read it very frequently but he seems like a good guy.

I've just gone back to look at Camels and Chocolate again…I just don't get all the photos of herself and the "for Stories that move you". I'm sorry Kristin if you read this. I'm sure you are a very nice woman but the new design is too much! I looked at the designer's website and it seems like most of the blogs are like this. A in W's isn't featured on their site but her's has far fewer self photos on the front page. The ones they featured on the site are all similar designs with loads of photos of the blogger. The Be Financially Fit blog has so many posed photos !!(don't think he's a travel blogger- but still).

C&C's twitter photo is of her and her husband with a Beyonce quote. So much WTF. I honestly don't get it, at all. I know that her blog was always one source of income for her (out of many). She's obviously trying to re-associate herself with it and ramp up its image, but I'm not sure why. Is it for a reality show? She's doing sponsored/marketing trips now (along with Alex which might explain a lot) so maybe that website looks off because it's geared towards marketers instead of blog readers. If she did that on purpose I think it's such a mistake, but it's her choice obvs. It's a shame because I always loved her blog and I've thought lately that I outgrew it, but I don't think it's just me.

Agree about Heart My Backpack. She has some great adventures.

I think if Adventurous Kate's blog was called something generic like Kate Travels I'd be more tolerant of her occasional rants and whining, but reading about her enjoyable travels and then getting hit with a random drama queen post is jarring to me and it seems to happen a lot. I started reading her because I was going to a country she was in at the time, and I was excited to use some of her tips in real time. She put up a post absolutely flipping out over something and saying it was one of her worst experiences. I had the same thing already booked and I was so worried. I considered canceling but my friend wanted to do it anyway so I sucked it up. And it couldn't have been more fun or less dramatic! I showed my friend the blog post afterwards and she seriously didn't stop laughing over it for days. She's a teacher and she said her pre-teen students sound less dramatic during their "my life is over" fits. Now my friend asks me what Unadventurous Kate is up to every time I see her.

I'd love to know which of the many dramas this was. I'll take a guess at the Nicaragua boat one (but you don't have to reveal if you don't want to..). I always wondered if her boat sinking one was try. I presume it was but she does have a lot of drama in her life!

I just saw Alex in Wanderland's blog and it looks like she is moving to Koh Tao for 6 months. So groundbreaking.

Yes, I'm curious too! Though I'm pretty sure her Indonesia one was legit, she had photos that looked seriously not fun and I think she's mentioned meeting up with the other shipwreck passengers since then (the ones that had the baby)?

Another SOMI for me is Flora the Explorer. I used to read her occasionally, but since following her on Snapchat I've really come to like her personality and her posts seem more lively to me now. (I think the British accent totally helps.)

Plus she won Nat Geo's annual travel writing competition this year, so you won't find shitty SEO bait and third-grade level writing like soooome people's blogs…

I used to follow her way way back. Totally forgot about her. Then I clicked on some articles and remembered why: It’s full of SEO (102 in this case as she just knows how to do it well) She get a lot of freebie trips – literally the 5/7 posts from her homepages – which is off putting too.

I used to love http://www.thisbatteredsuitcase.com. Until she commenented on one of those Travel Blog Success bullshit stories that she was finally inspired to join TBS.

At the moment I am enjoying http://hopeengaged.com/
