It is true that travel blogs promise us wonders with their tickets but wo do not often asked the question about funding. Okay, then, each does what he can to be able to realize his dreams and others are sponsored to work and discover new horizons at the same time. They are just lucky !

Anyone reading Living in Another Language? Today, Amanda wrote that one of her goals is to be a successful travel blogger, but she turned down a 3 week media trip because her husband couldn't come. She will not travel without her husband. Her husband has a full time job (in an English speaking country) and doesn't earn his 4 week vacation for another year. Maybe it's time for a rebrand? hi-103

That's what doesn't make sense.  She seems to want to be a travel writer.  She doesn't foresee it truly becoming  a reality for the two of them but why not take the opportunity to do it on her own temporarily?  She says that it was their dream to travel together so she didn't want to do it without him but really, he should have encouraged her to go since according to her he does support her dreams.  She's not tied down by a nine to five job, it was 21 days not a year and it was FREE!!!  Refusing to go sounds co-dependent and ridiculous to me.  My husband would have insisted I take the opportunity.  I am kind of obsessed with my husband too and prefer to travel with him but nobody has ever offered me a three week all expense paid vacation before and even if they did I probably couldn't take it because of work.  If her blog is part of her business (even if she's focusing more on her design work) that would have been a great opportunity to add blog content and travel for free.  Very silly decision in my opinion.

delurked just to post about this. I've been following Be My Travel Muse for a while and she was a total SOMI but the past couple months I think she's changed a lot and it's started to bug me. She all of a sudden thinks she's a blogging expert and such an "OMG off the beaten path traveller" compared to everyone else. Then she comes out with this: https://www.facebook.com/BeMyTravelMuse/posts/731203980283260

She also sent an email out to subscribers basically saying she's running out of money and doesn't want to get a real job, turns down 99% of the work she is offered yet can't handle her current work load, hired an assistant to help, then still asks for readers to fund her site and travels because it's somehow such a benefit for us.

I don't actually have a problem with the Patreon model, but this seems dodgy. I can't believe she's asking for $6k a month to travel ad-free, and things like a new camera are one-off purchases, not something you need monthly income for.

Yeah, the costs seem especially egregious to me, too. 6K a month? Her facial expression in her header photo is looking so smug.

Wow.  I've really seen everything now.  She gets points for creativity and nerve that's for sure and she already has a few 'patrons.'  I'm not sure why bloggers get the impression that people are supposed to fund their lifestyle.  I certainly don't get why anyone would be so oh my gosh interested in being part of her google chats, skyping with her and having access to her Q and A videos.  I mean, who does she think she is?  A celebrity? eek

Again.  Wow.

I found a travel blogger asking for $10k/month on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/30DayAdventures
He also says "Approximately 60% of my day is spent chasing after brands and agencies for their $$$$ support to keep the adventures going", and I can't help but feel like if that's true then the content can't be very good – so why should anyone sign up to sponsor it? It's like they think if they sign up, people will just throw money at them. (I'm happy to see he's only made it $10/month, no k.)
In contrast I really like this guy's set-up: http://www.patreon.com/michaeltyler
He doesn't have anything pledged yet but it looks like he's just signed up, and I think his goals are reasonable and well put.

Woah!! Woah! Let me get this straight? Kristen "I don't need material things or my old Newport Beach lifestyle" Addis is saying she needs $6000 a month and wants other people to fund it! Well she just lost me as a reader! I've had it with these entitled travel bloggers! I actually have a couple of friends/ friends of friends who write wonderful travel/expat blogs- and they do it all for free in their own time. You dont need $6000!
I get that she doesn't have another job, but then maybe if she can't afford to travel anymore she should get one! I just don't think there is a single travel blog out there that is so informative I need to pay for it or fund the bloggers travelling. Does anyone?? She really thinks she is doing us all a favour and her info is far superior to a guide book or a bit of googling?

I'm completely with you here. She is just trying to take advantage of people and clearly thinks her readers are total morons. If SHE can figure it out (for free) and do it, then why is she expecting others to pay her for that in order to invest in their own adventures? It's just the stupidest shit ever. Ebooks are a fantastic way for travel bloggers to make money whilst travelling and cash in on their experiences, I am all for that, but this is something else entirely.

LMAO $6000?!?! Where is she even traveling with that kind of request? That is so pathetic and sad. Sorry that you might have to get a side job like the rest of the world trying to make it in the travel writing industry… this is so bizarre. And the fact that her "How to pack" video was the highlight — like we couldn't figure out fitting shit in a backpack without her help. Yikes. I was always on the fence about her but now that makes me cringe.

Amanda from LIAL turned down a 3 week trip because Derik didn't get any vacation time, but then they got 'surprised' with 3 weeks off by his boss? 3 weeks?! She describes them as loving adventure and being out of their element, but I think she is kidding herself. She can't take an organised trip without him and they only want to live in English speaking countries from now on. And they went on a cruise (supposedly- the post was written in advance) for this 3 week holiday. Hey, cruises are great and all but is that really being outside your element?
Also from her recent post- I I just can't believe they didn't know it was winter in NZ in June! Who 'forgets' that? And were they teaching English in Korea? Because contracts are a year long there so they must have left some poor school without 2 teachers if they were intending to stay then decided in 2 weeks to leave Korea!
