Anyone else listen?

Do you wish you had a bingo board every time they say:

  • Scivonian dissonance (i have no idea how to spell that and google didn't help)
  • Chekhov's _______
  • whistle past
  • with a bullet
  • Loni's weird laugh

Despite their weird tics I could listen to people talk about Buffy and Angel all day long.

I love Buffy and Angel. L O V E! But they analyze it too damn deep. Ugh. They annoy me. I only listen to them when I've listened to everything else. Some of their least favorites have been my favorite. They talk about the first season (of Buffy) not being the best but I enjoyed it. It let the audience know it's going to be just more than vamps. The high school years are golden. Except for Hush and Once More With Feeling. I was looking forward to their discussion of Hush but was disappointed. Could be because I'm just that annoyed by them.

I do use the "go forward 10 seconds" button a lot. Especially when they spent literally 15 minutes talking about "ADR" which they never actually defined (Automated dialogue replacement). Sometimes they are a little too pleased with themselves. But since there is no other buffy podcast, I suffer through it.

I'm so happy I just saw this! I literally have a mental list of stuff that they say all the time. In addition to your list:

  • Journeyman director
  • Sweater Giles
  • "This is the Xander I remember" or "This is MY Xander"
  • Anya is "problematic"
  • Jokes about Oz's van

But I still love the podcasts, because, like you, I just want to listen to people talk about the Buffyverse.

It's funny because I don't tend to deeply analyze tv shows or movies, but I LOVE how much they break things down. My husband and I both really like BtVS and Angel, so when he catches me listening to Dusted he'll usually stop and listen for a bit too. Both of us feel like they often are able to verbalize why we did or didn't like something even if we've never thought about it that deeply.

There are times I disagree with them, but it's still fun. Unfortunately I really don't like how Amber Benson portrays Tara, so I'm settling it for a couple seasons of disagreeing with them since they've already said multiple times how wonderfully she plays Tara. Amber Benson has always frustrated me because I want to love Tara and just can't because of her portrayal.

I don't listen to Dusted, since I have never watched Buffy but I do listen to their other podcasts

We Used To Be Friends – a Veronica Mars podcast. It's pretty good. They spend a lot of time discussing what an interesting genre the show is and how the writers do a good job of holding true to the noir genre while still appealing to a younger demographic. Lani shares my love of Logan, although I wish they could come up with an adjective other than "Puckish" to describe him.

The Scot and the Sassenach – an Outlander podcast. Great since he is a Scot and she is a Sassenach (someone other than a Scot). Together they review the television show, but Alistair has also done a literary review of the first book in the Outlander series. He plans to do Dragonfly in Amber soon and has also done literary reviews of other books such as Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and Pride and Prejudice.

The Lightbulb – this one is supposed to be about pop culture, but it sometimes misses the mark. I skip any episode that doesn't appeal to something I am interested in.

I'm also a huge Buffy/Angel fan that didn't know this was a thing. I mean, I have not one but two Buffy tattoos. Will definitely give this a listen soon. dance

I've really been liking this a lot!

But still. My bingo squares.

  • Three-beat
  • "It depends on what you come to Buffy for"
  • "Made to delight me"
  • Alastair's over-enunciation of every 'T' sound. Wry-Ter. Meh-Taphor.
  • Lani's "*sigh*….yeeeaaahhh?"

Their list of Every Buffy Episode Ever is wack as hell.

"Pangs" in the top 5? "Earshot" at 38? GTFO

OK I love Buffy and I started listening to this podcast because I read it here.  And ZOMG yes to Dusted Bingo.

"Whistle Past"

"This is my Xander/Willow/Oz"

Also I am miffed that Alastair does all the recapping.  I wish they would switch it off and one week Lani does the recap for Buffy/Angel and then Alastair does the recap the following week.  This way we get to hear their voices and perspectives a bit more evenly.

Because while they are a cute couple and they obviously get along immensely well and they don't do any of that gross passive aggressive banter that some podcast people do (thinking of Balanced Bites) Alastair can overpower Lani and steam roll her in the discussion.  It it interesting to listen and keep an ear out for that, because partly it is the way mean and women interact with each other and the vocabulary they use but sometimes I just want Lani to say "I disagree" or "you're wrong and her is why" rather than like "mhmm, yeah no I think.."

Aside from that it is fabulous and I've been listening to them nonstop and even post on their forum under the same name.  I am so happy to have discovered them.

I love their jokes about Oz's van!  I just finished the podcast where Oz leaves and Lani made a joke about willow running out and saying "leave your van it has more plot relevance than you!" Which made me laugh out loud.

And I actually love Sweater Giles.  Even though they say it often it is one of those things that actually works for me.
