I am totally obsessed with true crime podcasts – it makes my commute SO much better! After Serial ended, I listened to Thinking Sideways – I agree with everyone, the hosts can be kind of annoying sometimes, and they used to get so many pronunciations wrong that it got really old. But I like some of the stories they cover – like the Tylenol murders one. S&S is also crazy – I get sick of the recordings sometimes -they can go on way too long. Same with Generation Why, good but sometimes the material is just eh to me. Also enjoy Liar City, but they don't release eps that often, and it is at random times.

I definitely recommend The Unresolved Podcast. The host did a really good job on the first few eps.

What is the Black Tapes podcast? Is it like a story type podcast (like Welcome to Nightvale) or true crime in a story format? I read the about section but I still don't understand. And is it focused on supernatural stuff? Because that's not really my thing. Just wondering, it's hard to tell from the website what it's about!

Also, on a side note, for anyone who liked the satanic panic stuff on S&S or is just interested in general, I highly recommend the documentary Capturing the Friedmans. It's about the investigation of a 1980's child abuse case that may have turned into a bit of a witch hunt. I'm still not sure what I think actually happened. It's really great, done by Andrew Jarecki, the same guy who made The Jinx.

Black Tapes is a docudrama. Super interesting. I'm kinda sad it's fictional.

Oh my god, seriously creepy. Maura Murray is my favorite (although that's a weird word to use) unresolved case, so of course I jumped right into the podcast. First few episodes were extremely solid, but I think James Renner is a scary, scary, SCARY motherf**ker.

The Last Podcast On the Left is one of my favorites although I am not a big fan of the government conspiracy episodes. The three guys who host it do a great job of balancing humor with the serious nature of the topics. It might not be for everyone, though.

I recently discovered Criminal and absolutely love it. I highly recommend episode 25 "The Portrait." It was such a haunting case and the podcast did a great job discussing it.

Another fan of LPOTL here – I love true crime and the way they combine the real stories with humor is right up my alley. They can be a bit crass at times, but I love them. I had a situation where I was laughing out loud on a train ride home and when someone asked me what I was listening to, I had to say "a podcast about Jeffrey Dahmer". It was pleasantly awkward.

I'm liking Sword and Scale a lot. I was a bit bored with today's new episode. The Luka Magnotta episode gave me the chills and almost put me off the whole thing. Terrifying.

I believe the Luka Magnotta one was the one where he had actual of somebody being beaten to death for fun.  It was awful.  I had to turn it off.  I'm a true crime nerd and I know beople are capable of horrible things but I don't need that in my life.  I guess I like to keep to an Ann Rule-ish level of classiness – no punches pulled but not reveling in the grotesque depths of human behavior either.

I really enjoyed some of the earlier less graphic ones like the historical true crime in Oklahoma where the girl randomly shot the Chinese exchange student and the one about the poor lady killed answering a Craigslist ad for baby clothes.  I am always selling and giving away shit on Craigslist and Freecycle and it made me think twice for the first time.

Yup. That's what did it for me. There was just no reason for them to play that audio. That case f**king haunted me for days for the same reason the Paul Bernardo case haunted me: those two guys were the embodiment of pure evil. Crimes of passion , like Serial, are one thing. But watching the total lack of remorse of these two men just…it f**king wrecked me to see examples of that kind of depravity.

Exactly. That audio gave me the chills. I actually had nightmares the night I listened to that Luka episode.

Thinking Sideways: I really wanted to like this podcast because I think they talk about some great stories. It's got the same friends just shooting the shit feel as Generation Why, but I dunno. The two males hosts come off as so mansplain-y and often cut off the female host or try to correct her. It just gets old after awhile. Also the whole first half of the episodes sound like they're reading from a script or a Wiki page.

I totally agree, I just can't listen to this podcast for that reason. Once I noticed how often she is cut off, or starts saying something and then stops for one of the men to speak, I couldn't stop noticing it. It happens ALL the time and it infuriates me so much that I can't concentrate on what any of them are saying. I listen to podcasts while in the car, and this just makes me rage! ASDFKLJ.

Especially since the two male hosts aren't nearly as funny or witty as they think they are. Urgh.

I tried so hard to like True Murder and the content was good and interesting but like you said the audio quality and lack of editing made it unlistenable.

I enjoyed the first few episodes I listened to, but then today I attempted DEATHBEDSIDEMANNER and wanted to run my car off the road. He was obviously reading from a script (bad form in my opinion) with no attempt at a rehearsal beforehand. He was struggling to pronounce french words or was stumbling over the start of a sentence. So distracting and frustrating. Such interesting material, too. Too bad. 2 stars; cannot recommend. drool

God, what is it with those hosts difficulty with any surname more "ethnic" than Smith or Jones. A recent episode about the Beaumont children mentioned my home town of Dandenong which was pronounced correcly – even a lot of Australians get that wrong so I was kind of impressed. And at least once per show Devon will say "that's weird". Well of course it's weird, every case they deal with is full of mystery and confusion, that's the point of the show, no need to point it out all the time. I do like the show but the "witty banter" and attempts at black humour have me rolling my eyes more often than not.

My obsession with Serial last year bordered on the unhealthy, but I can't be bothered with the new season. The subject matter doesn't interest me.

Me! I'll discuss!

I actually really enjoy it. The one episode that I was not really down with was the Cold N. Hollifield one. That guy…well…he was just kinda nuts. But I actually liked the psychic episode. It didn't bother me. I mean – why not?!? All in all I find it very interesting. Was Maura really driving? Why didn't anyone check the abandoned house? I gots all kindsa questions.popcorn

Me too!

Yeahhh that Cold N Haulfield one made me cringe. He just sounded like a nut bag and really just takes away from what the two guys are trying to do.

I still think the most simple answer has to be the solution but this is one strange story….

Soooooo I'm almost through with the child sex slave conspiracy eps of S&S (thanks for the rec) and listening to Noreen all I could think about was Morgan Ingram's mother. It's really sad. I wonder if she actually saw an adult Johnny or not. Like, if she's not making it up it probably wasn't her son but someone was trying to f**k with her or something. And then there's the tiny part of me that almost hopes it's all true because at least then a grieving mother knows her child is alive.

Dark content aside, I couldn't help but think of this every time they said "sex party" :
