I guess this kind of thing bugs me because its pretty much always directed towards women.  It's a complete gendered thing, I dont think I've ever heard anyone complain about the way a man's voice sounds on a podcast.

Totally true, though I have (privately) complained about both men's and women's voices to my husband. That said (and acknowledging that there is a sexist element to it), Susan from the Undisclosed Podcast makes me want to stab out my eyes. Stop ending every sentence like it's a question? Christ.

I can't stand to listen to Ira Glass.

I thought Josh and Chuck's Stuff You Should Know episode about vocal fry made some really good points about sexism and speech trends in general. You should listen to it no matter what your opinion on the subject. It's definitely true that women get called out for annoying voices way more than men.

Someone mentioned Stuff You Missed In History Class, which I loved when the hosts were Sarah Dowdey and Deblina Chakraborty. They were both really natural and had a good chemistry in my opinion. I stopped listening with the new hosts, they seemed a bit awkward and I admit I did find their voices annoying. However, my husband listened to it and they didn't bother him at all, so I think it has a lot to do with personal preference or the way certain sounds hit your ears.

I hate the voice of Ira Glass. Can't stand it. Also he includes "like" in his sentences like three time, you like know what I mean? It's super annoying.

FREAKING THIS!  I get so many looks by people when I proclaim that I cannot stand listening to Ira Glass.  Screw the female vocal fry, I think there are many many MANY men in broadcasting who have that Ira Glass radio voice, and it drives me mad.  Let's talk about that, people!

Yeah, HELLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAA sexist. You never hear people complain about men's voices (or at least far less often), and the common complaints through time are ALWAYS based on the ways young women are talking. Though, to be fair, I did hear someone say that they though Kai Rysdal had an annoying voice and I found it hilarious.

Phoebe Judge, Criminal.  I like the show but would love it with a different host.  Listen to the way she says postage at :26

FWIW I find many men's voices annoying too, Ira Glass being tops on the list.

Another thing that bugs me about vocal fry complaints- when complaining about a women's voice, the complaint is often coupled with "it makes her sound dumb/stupid"

Complain all you want about Ira Glass, but those complaints are not linked to his intelligence. When you hear complaints about a women's voice, a comment about how that voice reflects her intelligence is usually close behind.

Sarah and Deblina were my favorite pairing to date on Stuff You Missed in History Class. I'm always about a month or two behind on episodes so I found out about Holly + Tracy later in the game. I stopped listening for awhile because I couldn't handle their voices but they've gotten much better and seem to have developed more natural rapport over time (although now they record from different locations usually). Give one of the more recent episodes a try, maybe? My only qualm at this point is that they seem to go out of the way to deal with criticisms (valid and invalid) *during* the podcast. I don't care, get to the history stuff!

Back on topic: I've tried so, so hard to listen to Starlee Kine but I just can't. I feel bad about this.

Not that it's a competition, but I find uptalk to be a million times more annoying than vocal fry.

Frank Deford is an excellent sports writer, and his book about his daughter who died of CF was very touching.  But the dude sounds three sheets to the wind in every.  single.  broadcast.

Ira Glass sounds like it's painful for him to speak. I also find the one guy on Stuff You Should Know annoying for the same reason.

I haven't been crazy about the Holly & Tracy era of Stuff You Missed in History Class. Not a voice issue — just don't think either of them are that great on air. That show needs better producers, though. I think H & T need more direction and editing than Sarah & Deblina probably did.

bandwagon

His weird slur drives me insane. I'm convinced Lagunitas sponsors his show so they can hear him say "Glaglunintas".
