A friend of mine has hung out with her and she's as awesome IRL as she is as a blogger!

I will say that I'm jealous she got people on the interwebz to pay her dental bills because damn, if only that were my case.

ITA with everyone who's mostly glad that her posts are infrequent.  I binge-read her archives after I finally bit the bullet and read her blog for the first time.  I lost count of how many times I laughed so hard I cried.

(For years I thought it was a cooking blog or restaurant review blog because of the name.  I'm probably the lone idiot with that one. embarrassed)

Anyone else read her book?  Usually I super hate blogger books, but hers was amazing and really unexpectedly touching in terms of the stuff about her mom.  She's had such a difficult life and it really makes me happy that she's doing relatively well now.

I also love that she's got a total soft spot when it comes to Helen Keller (the cat, not the person).

I read her book and it was amazing. I'm not one to laugh out loud when reading but whether it is her blog or her book, she cracks me up. I actually found her through GOMI because someone posted a question about SOMI blogs by single women.

One of my all time favorite posts is the one about watching a Match.com commercial and then what her version of it would be. I'm grinning just thinking about it.

Okay, did any other hams read her latest post?  I feel like it's everything I love about Sam Irby all mashed up into one blog entry: touching, narrative, funny as hell, with her writer's voice coming through.

Shit, she had a completely horrifying childhood though.

Favorite part: "it'll be just like that book "are you my mommy?" with fewer teeth and more n-words. basically what i'm trying to say is that i'm probably about to get murdered."

My terrible, shitty dad several years ago and this whole post was A+++++++++ direct to my heart. I have always loved her, but this was just exceptional and heartbreakingly funny.

One of the many things that I totally love about her is thats she's got this bitingly funny, takes no crap side, which is obviously where her humor is grounded, at the same time there's a carefully guarded sweetness and vulnerability that's apparent in post like this one (and in the essay from "Meaty" where she talks about taking care of her mom).

I mean, she's trying to track down her brothers, who clearly aren't all that interested in being found/keeping in touch with her just so they can have a chance to participate in disposing of her abusive father's ashes.  I feel like most people would have given up after a few rounds of internet sleuthing and calling.  Clearly this road trip isn't all about trying to locate family and scatter her dad's ashes, which is also what I love.  In the hands of a blogger who was less funny/more earnest, this could have been written as some Important Life Journey and an exercise in Coming to Terms.

Agreed 10000. What I find so amazing about her is that she had this really shitty childhood but she never sounds bitter about it. Ever. She talks about it jokingly and you never get a 'feel bad for me' vibe from her. And that chapter about her mom had me f**king weeping.

It's also amazing that she is taking her brothers into consideration considering they are not close (obvs). She's just trying to do what she believes is the right thing, making sure they don't care so she can just get rid of the damned ashes.

I had the same reaction as you hams. It takes a lot of talent to be able to write the post she did without coming across as self-pitying or trite, and still be hilarious. She's so awesome.

So Sam is a lesbian now or was that satire? I found her post hilarious and if she is a lesbian and she is happy, good for her! She wrote before that that is how women will end up because we like nice places and shit so I thought it was funny. But I feel like a dumbass because I don't know if she means it or not.

I think her next book is coming out soon and I'm stoked!
