Thanks, postit. It's all good. We've been through homelessness, serious illnesses, family deaths and a whole heap of real-time shit that puts life into perspective. :-) A little shit-talking isn't going to upset me much – I'm an accomplished shit-talker my damn self. :-)

And the real reason we got married had nothing to do with property or citizenship, it was really more about doing our part to destroy the sanctity of marriage.

Also, my write-up is kind of obnoxious. It kind of reads like I *wanted* to be a blogger, so I think I understand the "they've got to be bloggers" impression. Anyway, have a lovely day, all. smile

I go back and forth on OBB. It was a great big rip off of Indiebride, but since Indiebride is no more, (RIP) I think it did a good job of stepping into the breech. I find the website clunky and disorganized to use, though.

The extreme derpy geekery comes across as heart warming to me most of the time. The more extreme examples do seem a little childish, but then what's grown up about the normal princess fantasy?

Grapejelly, I think you're a great sport.

TurkeyVulture, did I understand right, was that your wedding? That's a gorgeous wedding and I'm nuts about that bouquet. I'm not a fan of fake flowers 99% of the time, but that is exceptionally beautiful.

Yep, that was my wedding. (NOW YOU ALL KNOW MY REAL NAME!!!1!1) Thanks — I was fond of my bouquet, too. I really don't like artificial flowers, either, so I was happy to learn that I could fly by the seat of my pants and make some fakey flowers that looked halfway decent.

Well, wow. Beautiful, again. I'm inspired to make some myself.

Chiming in to say your bouquet was gorgeous! My florist put fake flowers in all of my wedding arrangements, but they were cheap and garish. I was mortified. Yours was lovely! And perfect location!

GOMI is a vile rat hole now, but there's no option to delete my account.

The Portlandia sketch "Cool Wedding" always kind of reminds me of OBB, as much as I love OBB. :)

(and thanks, glad you guys liked my flowers.)

Thank you for reminding me of this. God I love Portlandia. Put a bird on your wedding cake!

My fiance and I have constantly been reminded of that sketch throughout the wedding planning process because we see the most over the top nonsense all over the internets. I think you nailed it on the head there.

I think I like Offbeat Bride, I find some of the weddings showcased in it a bit obnoxious and too try-hard, but I do like the discussion blogs which are posted every now and again about gender norms in a relationship or the hard talks you should have about marriage.

Too many wedding blogs try to avoid those topics or only touch on them in a very superfluous manner.

I met OBB not long after I got married. I enjoyed it until all the weddings started to look alike to me. Generally, Rockabilly with a smattering of uber geek for variety.

Also, I've read this blog post by Ariel (http://offbeatempire.com/2012/10/liberal-bullying) on another website that was dealing with a bit of an issue with some folks who decided that the group need more social justice. I thought it was a brilliant summary of what was going on in our group. I have a lot of respect for Ariel for keeping the website up and running and generally civil (sometimes too civil, if that can even be a thing) for so long if she has to deal with this sort of thing. I'd go insane.

I just bookmarked that article. As a not-progressive person (am I regressive?)  I surely do like it.

Yes.  I really, really enjoy Offbeat Empire, and find it very illuminating.  I've had really positive interactions with Ariel and like her, both as the person she presents, and the businesswoman she is — she may not be everyone's type, but I find her way better than Meg, especially in the comments.  < / WK >

Grape Jelly, you've been very gracious.

And yeah…some of the weddings featured on OBB read a bit childish or try-too-hard to me, but so do a lot of "traditional" weddings when it comes to passing as richer than you are, etc etc so it's kind of a tomato-tomahtoh thing for me.  I'm sick to death of seeing chuck taylors at weddings, though.  Please someone make it stop.
