When I was planning my wedding (5 years ago) I would skip websites that didn't offer some sort of pricing information – I wasn't going to waste my time calling people who might not be in my price range.

In the end we got INCREDIBLY lucky – I found an absolutely amazing photographer who was just starting her professional business out – got her +1 for the entire day, she edited and processed something like 100 of the pictures, and we got all the pictures on a disc with a release.  We also got an engagement session from her included w/ all the pictures/release blah blah blah.  Because she was starting out we got her for $300 – I still refer people to her but now her price is $3000.  It's always my #1 tip for brides-to-be that I know, find people who are starting out (but have a great portfolio) – the price will often reflect the starting-out-ness of all of it.

THIS. as a "just getting started" wedding photographer, I love hearing stories like this. thank you for taking a risk on us newbies high-five

This is wonderful. I am also just starting out in the world of photography. Well, I'm not a total newb, but I am new to being in my own business and getting a feel of what I like to photograph. My first shoots (outside of my friends and family) were advertised on a free website asking to shoot families, all done for free. Some even gave me some cash because they were super happy with the service/photos. I am at the stage now where people are asking me if I shoot weddings but I haven't, so I can't offer them my services just yet. I am looking at being a second-shooter for a while or doing some wedding workshops at least, then entering the world of wedding photography quite cheap.

If you can get photographers that need to build their portfolio in an area of photography (but other areas of their portfolio look good) you can get a decent photographer for your wedding quite cheap. It's normal for them to up their price once they become more in-demand.

I'd be looking on free websites such as Craigslist or even check out the local collages that have photography students.

Here is my advice to you: Just do it.  If someone asks you to shoot their wedding KNOWING you don't have any experience in it yet, DO IT. Second shooting can be a good way to learn, but it's not nearly as useful as doing it for yourself as a first shooter. If you've been to a wedding, you can shoot a wedding. Have faith in yourself and your abilities and jump in, head first.

heyhihello – unfortunately I am in Australia :( That sounds really good about the pool, I'm looking at that website now. I have emailed a few local wedding photographers but they are all full-up with second shooters/mentoring, but they're all keeping my details on file. I guess I will just keep at it!

icicleicicle – that scares the living hell out of me, but I understand where you are coming from. I am booked in for a small backyard wedding in July which I'm excited about. I am a little apprehensive about large venue weddings, and I don't have public liability insurance yet or insurance for my gear (still early days). So far when people have asked me, I've been honest with them about not having any experience with weddings, but I am more than capable of taking good photos. I show them my family/model folio work and they like the quality, it's how I got this little backyard wedding (plus I shot their traditional Indian engagement ceremony photos and they were wrapped!).

I think I will take your advice and be a bit more confident in my ability and just jump in. Thank you for the comment :)

One thing I've been wondering about lately is why do so many brides want their rehearsal dinner photographed? And do they really enjoy the resulting pictures? I've never understood why you'd want pictures of people eating unless you've just got a really killer table setting.

Anyone have any strong feelings about Jose Villa, Jasmine Star, or similarly well known photographers?

Jasmine Star DeLaTorre was caught plagiarizing a lot of the content on her blog and she apologized to anyone she offended (LOL). She said it was a mistake but it was an ongoing, premeditated process that she deliberately continued for a long time and only stopped when she was caught and publicly shamed.

Yeah I remember reading about that after the fact. Didn't she try to blame her interns or the minions who write her blog?

Can anyone tell me where Bobbi & Mike have been this past year? They used to be frequent bloggers and then they just kind of fell off the radar it seems. I really like them.

I used to religiously follow Bobbi & Mike and even participated in a Healthy Train! I did a HUGE purge on my blogroll a while back and dropped them. I haven't read in probably 2 years. I feel like if I read now she would be exhausting to me. So much energy and every wedding was THE BEST WEDDING EVER and every bride was THE MOST GORGE BRIDE EVER…just too much.

Suzanne Sugarbaker, it seems like a year ago, they seriously dropped content.  No longer blogging every wedding (unless they only did two or three last season).  Maybe they're focusing on workshops or something.

I had forgotten about the Jasmine Star content theft issue, that was a big thing. She always gives off the air that she does everything and has no minions (except JD).

I understand that you want to blog about every bride and every wedding, but every bride cannot be MOST GORGEOUS EVER.  I do think that as far as blog content, story-telling of the bride/groom story, Jasmine Star does a better job than most.  She tells details, a little background history etc, it's not "LOOK AT HER EYES! BEST IN THE WORLD!" every single post.  Doing that for every bride would be SO exhausting.

I kind of wish I had more pictures of mine. I only have a few that I asked my brother to take toward the end. The rehearsal dinner is a really happy memory for me and I guess I wish I could "relive" it through pictures. But the memory is strong enough without them. I don't need the pictures to remember the beauty of the setting (we had a food truck in the park); I think it's more like having pictures of our families and friends. So many of the wedding pictures are of us, and I guess I feel like the pics from the rehearsal would be more of our guests.

My guess about Bobbi & Mike is that their photographing less and teaching more.  Their prices have steadily increased over the last few years to where they're getting to the top of their local market's price range, thus, probably booking less weddings (which, they can afford to do at that price point).  From social media, it looks like they just wrapped up their 15th(-ish?) workshop and I know the 'Bobbi Shop' is still up and running (selling album templates to photographers).

I'm a fan of how consistent their images are in the way of colors, interesting backgrounds, and they seem to get genuine laughs and smiles out of their couples and families.  As a rule though, I can no longer read any text from any photographer; I cannot handle all of the gushing and self-compliments.

Can we talk about Tim Coulson again? Since being introduced to him by a thread on here (which seems to be deleted??), I enjoyed following his IG. Lately, though, I just want to reality slap him. He is SO insufferable about their travels, and now being coy about where they are? Screams of comment baiting. At least he's given Roo a break for a few days…

Well that's interesting. Guess who just posted where they are, because "a few people asked"….

Yes! I have been irritated by their new travel website and bragging about how they'll be hanging out with the Taza's in October. It just all seems like one big privilege brag. I am kinda jealous of the travel though.
