I thought it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to failures in adulting by xostaff/commenters. Past and present.

Examples: utensil packing, editing, endometrial lining management

I can't remember who it was, but I will never forget the person who used their couch as a maxi pad. WHY. NO.

Speaking of Marianne, why the hell did H-Ed let her move solo? Isn't he a kept man with no responsibilities and an abundance of time? I can seriously see him saying something like "I can't miss Thanksgiving with Mom." He has to be a mama's boy. I'm assuming Marianne hasn't clarified because his excuse must be extra super duper lame – like so lame even Marianne knows it's lame.

I thought he had a job? And Marianne allowed him the use of his own money again?

IDK, I just assume that their home has got so much goddamn crap in it, that it will legitimately take a while to get it packed up. I mean…

She mentioned in the comments that he stayed behind to finish packing (which he was now done) and would be starting his travels somewhat soon. She was pretty vague, though.

Also, her LinkedIn shows that for the last six years, she is (or was) a QA Team Lead for a company that has contracts with the DOD and the Navy. How does someone hold down a job like that and still manage to be so inept at life?

Shit. I'm in QA (but a different industry). I have no clue how she managed to hold down her job. My boss basically thrives on control, and the non-compliance/ineptitude of others is basically the bane of my existence.

I bet Marianne is one of those little worker bees that are extremely good at their jobs because they never (pardon the term) "think outside of the box." She must be one of those people that are incapable of thinking outside of herself, she does as she's told and never questions it. She definitely doesn't overthink things. I've had coworkers like that – they are GREAT at their jobs but you'd never want to have lunch with them because they talk too much or they ask stupid questions and say mindnumbingly stupid shit.

I still can't believe Ed let her move solo – I would be so f**king pissed! How long does it take to pack a f**king house – even a borderline Hoarders house like Marianne's??? Just throw shit in boxes and get shit done. I've also moved on short notice and I just made it happen. I feel so sad for Marianne. It would be a huge challenge for me to start a new job in a completely new climate right before Thansgiving and do it all solo because my househusband enjoys horizontal living. I just feel sad for her. frown

Heh, the bolded part just reminded me of something. Marianne has recently become friends on Facebook with one of my really good friends (I think the connection there is work-related, since my friend does a lot of freelance writing/editing on the side). Almost without fail, Marianne has been inserting herself into in-jokes she has NO IDEA about on my friend's posts and comment threads.

Like recently my friend posted something about public transport and a bunch of us started riffing on the monorail song from the Simpsons ("The ring came off my pudding can!" "Take my penknife, my good man!"). So of course Marianne decided it would be a good idea to pop in and wreck the flow we had going on with some overly earnest comment about why taking the bus is a good thing. She even inserted herself into a post my friend made about our old high school (which Marianne did not attend). I realize this is getting to BEC levels here, but she just makes me f**king cringe. Bad enough on xoJane, because fine, I can just close the tab and go read something else, but ugh, stop fitnessing your way into things that have nothing to do with you! catfight

Marianne's job situation still has me curious.

Her xoj bio says:

What I Do, Job-wise: Technical editing by day, activism by night. Or, you know, whenever.

Of course that was written a long time ago (I assume when she started there). I just can't imagine her in QA for the freaking DOD.

Does your friend know what job she has that needed this omgspeedy and omgsoemotional move? chickenchicken

I wonder what some of these xojane staffers/writers/commenters consider to be "activism". Starting a nonprofit or feeding the homeless are what I would consider activism. Marianne and Ed seem both figuratively and literally, incredibly inactive.

Internet activism! Sometimes it has worked (see: black lives matter, or the Arab Spring) but mostly it becomes a circle jerk.

I have no idea if I misremebered this, but wasn't there an article (articles?) complaining about how no one taught the writer how to cook/budget/pay taxes and therefore it is totally acceptable to fail at those things now?
