I just got into xoJane this spring so I don't really have as much of right to complain as you long-time readers but seriously, this site needs some f**king work. Since the magazine has been bought out by Time, let's hope some actual improvements will be made.

So in case any xoJane staff member happens to read this, here is some stuff you could do to keep the lights on a little longer:

  • Hire a copyeditor. Hire a copyeditor. HIRE A COPYEDITOR. For god's sake, even an unpaid intern would be capable of catching all the typos and tense changes in article submissions even if your staff doesn't have the time.
  • Please put a year ban on publishing anything related to: untraditional wedding rings/vows/dresses/engagements etc, breastfeeding, dating a Republican stories

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I think it would be really cool if they started doing more "series" stuff like Creepy Corner. A couple of suggestions off the top of my head are columns about true crime and, like, home renovation and shit (oh man do I miss that one series where they were renovating the house. I still wonder what happened to that couple and their house).

Fuck that idea like the fucking Captain of the Thai Fuck Team fucking at the fucking Tour de Fuck

I agree. They need actual columns instead of a mishmash of whatever stuff their editors choose to turn in. That's one thing that bugs me about xoJane, is that I have no idea what it's supposed to be.

If it's a women's lifestyle online magazine, why aren't there regular articles and columns about managing health, home, and career beyond the "My weird vagina did shit!" or "I messed up at my job! Whoops LOL"? If it's a feminist site, why don't we discuss current events beyond s.e.'s sporadic "YOU SHOULD BE OUTRAGED!" write ups and think pieces on subjects that have already been discussed on other mainstream sites?

strong NEW xoPersonalities/characters

I still dig the confessional essay stuff even though it's probably on the wane now generally, but even with the pre-sale, pre-paring down xoPeople that I liked, they had tapped the well of personal Content by like two, three years ago

I do not particularly mind repetitive content (well, depending – I think I have had my fill of wedding junk for all time) if it feels like a fresh voice telling the story, this goes for political & social justice-related content as well

Does Amber count as a new xoCharacter in your book?  Compelling enough?  Oversharey enough?  I would get down with SE Smith oversharing.  Hate their current angles though.

Re the bolded – same with me and the Special Christian perspective/experience.  It's as f**king stupid as someone chiming in with their white perspective/experience thinking it's somehow noteworthy.

Oooooh, tough call. A new xoCharacter, yes. And I do think her voice is "different" from… well, haha, there is no one else currently, but definitely different from many past regulars. Compelling, I don't know. Too soon to say. I feel like she keeps teasing/threatening to unspool the Dark Mystery that is Amber, but she hasn't pulled the trigger on it yet. I'm not nuts about her writing and I think she takes herself too seriously, but based on the story she linked from PANK in the one… f**k if I remember, in some thing she wrote, I would be really interested in hearing more about her family.

ETA I also, well, straight up think AHS is a garbage show, but I think the AHS column is a boring and bad idea anyway, especially since the season is already halfway over. Same with the dog column (is that still happening?) which is also boring, but I wouldn't put that on her because it had (has?) a lot of popular support. I also appreciate like a books thing that actually keeps happening, like, we obviously have really different tastes, but I love inflicting My Opinions on people, so I don't really care

I'd love to see a series about interesting jobs/careers. I've enjoyed the ones they have where someone took a job that was kind of unusual or exciting. And it would actually be emphasizing accomplishment for once. Heck, I'd pitch my future career if I had already finished my MA for it.

What would get me reading them again ( it used to be a daily read, but god that was a long, long time ago) is if they had a regular column highlighting work by female artists: musicians, writers, illustrators, etc. the first thing I turn to when I get my copy of Bust is the review section because I know that I will finally get to read a review section that gives female artists their due. I always find something I hadn't heard of.

And yes, I know Jane would find a way to ruin a review section and make it all about her "celebrity" friends from 20 years ago, along with cackling from her toxic hen party that it isn't like they are a feminist website or anything, but I can dream ( but not edit my GOMI posts because I lurk too much :-)

I think that's a great idea — but they'd need qualified people to run this column, otherwise we'd only get YA fiction.

Also, get someone to organize the xo email inbox properly with Outlook (or whatever other software they use) so that promotions/PR cold pitches go in certain folders, pitches and payment in other folders, etc.

I used to work a job where I got on average ~400 emails a day. They weren't all for me and most of them I could just delete or transfer to the right person, but it is doable to manage that.

This would improve the situation for:

-writers: getting paid, getting their stuff published, getting a response, etc.

-readers: getting to read new, interesting people whose pitches don't end up lost in the vortex of Modcloth receipts and follow-ups from the fangirls who were dumb enough to buy her stuff that is Emily's email inbox.

-and even xostaff: a well-organized inbox = increased efficiency for all people who use the general xo email addresses.

I have to say I am over ~improvement~ of xo and wish it to always remain a trainwreck emberkomodogad5bq4

Somewhat related, I have been looking for new sites to read and someone here mentioned Broadly, so I followed it on Twitter just to see if anything interested me. It seemed sort of boring but it was the last straw today when I saw the headline "What Actually Happens When Your Vagina Falls Out"… No thanks, xo2.0.

Seriously though, what you said. I can't figure out wtf xoJane's overall message or brand IS. It honestly has just become Thoughtcatalog For F**ked Up Female Toddlers – just random brain dumps by women who honestly need to take that shit to a therapist instead of the internet. But I guess therapists don't hand out 50 dollar bills for your aimless rambles about the weird smells in your panties.
