I thought it'd be nice to have a thread just for xoVain. I can't be bothered to keep up with xoJane anymore (except Louise's stuff) because it's just too pathetic.

Let's snark about some basic beauty shit.

Did y'all know hair can be pastel and ombre? drooldrooldrool Alyssa is always super cute, but cool toned pastel pink and white hair is neither rose gold nor particularly festive for winter.

This is rose gold hair. I'd be upset if I got what Alyssa has if I'd requested rose gold. But I guess she didn't complain too much since it was free?

Personally I'd like to learn more about red lipstick. I do wish they'd do a post of the best red lipsticks, perhaps in a list form. I can't seem to find that info anywhere on google.

Did you know skin gets dry in winter? Solving that winter dry skin issue is SUCH a secret, too!

I don't understand why big sites like this don't have to disclose when they receive press samples or when posts are sponsored. I mean, I know the FTC is not going to waste its time going after dinky little bloggers, but wouldn't it be worth their while to enforce the rules on bigger sites like xoVain or Jezebel or Refinery21, etc.?

NO WAY.

I also wish they could tell me how to avoid personal hygiene by instead dumping cornstarch/spraying chemicals on my hair and then perhaps brushing it out. Obviously I would like it best written in a tone of sleepover party beauty secret bomb dropping, with a touch of self-righteous "my hair doesn't smell even though I only wash it once a year".

*please include listicle of dry shampoos because none of us know how to read reviews on Sephora or MUA. Maybe they could do one of these posts every other month, in case I missed the first 27 versions.

They do have to disclose; they haven't been caught/reported yet. I brought non-disclosure up in the comments on xo a while ago and the response was along the lines of 'the whole magazine industry runs that way (pay-for-play without disclosure) so why should we do it?!'.

They're ridiculously stupid and careless at xo.

Yep, I believe Marci claimed awhile back in the comments that the disclosure regulation only applies to individual bloggers, not online magazines. I've no idea if that's true or if there's some sort of loophole. I wonder if they will have to start disclosing in light of the Time acquisition?

BTW, did y'all know Tamara has oily skin? And Danielle has fine hair? Mind = blown.

I'd like to see more posts from Danielle about extensions, and how to get them as brassy and thirsty looking as possible.

Also, definitely more posts from her about how to DIY inexpensive drugstore products using 10 different more difficult to obtain ingredients that cost roughly 10 times more than the product being duplicated. The homemade orange greasepaint article is a timeless inspiration.

One thing that has been striking me is how much more skilled a lot of the commenters are on LOTW versus the actual writers. There is a makeup artist who blends like a ma'f**ker, and who talked about pitching but never did. Sometimes I wonder how some of the Vain community became beauty writers. I like to slap shit on my face, where are my free luxury cosmetics?

Fondly,

Yeah, that was what I meant. I know that legally (or even just ethically!) they should be doing it – but I meant why don't they, clearly, have to follow the rules and face any apparent consequences? Maybe they factor any potential fines into their budgets? I don't see why it would apply to bloggers and not online magazines. Print magazines don't have direct links to purchase something, so that seems a little different.

But even print magazines have to have an "advertisement" label at the top of pages that are paid ads but look like regular stories (= sponsored post). Although I'm sure they have been sent the things they promote in their normal articles for free too.

I don't know of any instance of it being enforced. I just don't know why the FTC bothers making and updating regulations like this if they don't even enforce them on major websites. I've heard of advertisers insisting their bloggers follow the rules, I guess, but I don't know how hard they insist. But even if you sign up for those product review sites like BzzAgent they tell you a million times to make sure you tell everyone you talk to about the product that you got it for free.
