OMG such actual magazine editor chiming in here (albeit a little late): Publications of any type can receive all the product samples they want – that doesn't need to be reported or disclosed. Some publications like The New York Times won't accept free meals for their dining reviews for the sake of anonymity and to avoid bias, but, for the most part, it's expected that a writer should be able to try a product – at no expense to herself or the publication – before writing about it. And beauty is certainly different than other areas like fashion or home decor or electronics.

If the publication receives actual money to write about a product, then that makes it sponsored (online) or an advertorial (in print).

I don't understand why big sites like this don't have to disclose when they receive press samples or when posts are sponsored. I mean, I know the FTC is not going to waste its time going after dinky little bloggers, but wouldn't it be worth their while to enforce the rules on bigger sites like xoVain or Jezebel or Refinery21, etc.?

I get that. So let's say bloggers aren't required to disclose press samples either. Are we to believe that none of the posts on any of these "magazine" sites are sponsored, then?

(The c/o or press sample thing is more pressing with individual bloggers, when I think about it more. If they are receiving things for their personal use and possession, it's more likely to sway them, than a "magazine" receiving things that stay in the office or whatever. Still, I think it's ethically better to disclose.)

Way to half-ass it, Danielle. It was a cute idea until you decided to use the other candles you had laying around. It looks like you just stuck a candle in a shot glass filled with gunk.

Ya, I don't get it. It looks super unfinished with the white taper candles sticking out of the green beeswax. She should have just cut the candle to the same height as the beeswax or skipped the candle. Also: why is this on vain??

I'm probably alone on this but reading about candles and perfume is not what I'm into. If I can't smell it for myself, I really don't care.

At this point Vain is really becoming one big product list. 7 perfumes, 5 candles, lists like that. I miss the tutorials that weren't super boring/basic, wahhhh.

Christ on a bike, does anyone at Vain wash regularly?  I do know some people whose hair looks better washed once or twice a week, but I know a bunch more who *think* it looks better and really just look greasy AF.

Most of their pieces are fluff and look at me. I like almost ALL of Tamara's stuff. Kelly has done some cool looks too and her Furiosa costume was the bomb dot com.

It's a cross-post from MIMI. From what I've seen of them so far, they seem to dabble a lot in disguised advertorials/infomercials. They should indicate that it is sponsored content, though.

ETA: I see DrollDoll is fangirling Marci on vain also, attacking the one commenter who said the post read like an advertisement. drool

Meh I've worked at several lifestyle/fashion/beauty digital pubs now and the beauty bloggers have hoards of product in their desks and office cupboards. They don't even try everything they receive for free. I can assure you- almost all of the product recommended at certain sites *cough cough* are features because companies paid for them be posted, and all the editorial staff is aware that they should include certain brands as often as possible on a month to month basis. It's not all a sham- just 70-80% is depending on the website. I agree, large websites should be required to state whether posts are sponsored or not, even if its a tiny little disclosure in the corner of the page. Sort of defeats the whole purpose of a product roundup if you're only sourcing product because it's on a piece of paper from the head of affiliate marketing…

Same. They give her a very 80s look, and not in a good way.

Yeah. They don't fit her face properly, there is too much glasses below her eyes. Also not sure if the tortoiseshell is the best coloring for her complexion.
