Excellent completely unfounded prediction, SCC. Haha. smile I tend to think the same things, especially about there being "more behind the absence than we know."  And knowing J&S, there is A LOT we probably don't know. (Very interesting by the way about DIY being influenced by the economy.)

My feeling is that it boils down to something very specific with the publisher/deal. Some sort of conflict or disagreement that may have caused the shut down. Which I realize on the outside doesn't make an iota of sense. Because you would think that a blog would only be good for a book, promoting it and such.

I do know another 'blogger,' you could say, well he's actually the editor-in-chief of a pretty big cooking website. He also has a book coming out this year, in September as well. He's been noticeably much more absent than usual on the site (for about a year now)…and believe me the site has suffered, but it's because 1) He's been busy writing the book, and 2) When it comes to his book, he's under strict contractual rules to not release even a smidgen of content on the website that will later appear in the book. He's basically forced to save almost everything for his book.

So perhaps there was a problem with J&S releasing TMI on their blog…that, combined with their obvious burn-out, and being 'overloaded' with blog & book…So everyone just decided to pull the whole damn thing. You know the two laziest DIY'ers would sign right up for anything that means less work.

Plus J&S will never ever let anyone forget their near-death experience of writing their first book – the immense blood-sweat-and-tears they poured out 'for their readers' (good job on making your audience feel guilty and indebted, certainly is your specialty J&S). In general I think they were probably terrified of a repeat of writing book #1 while writing the blog again, so naturally they would jump right on board with any talk of yanking the blog. Who knows.

The book doesn't come out until September, why would now be the time for publicity?  Come back in the month or so before it comes out.  They could be writing the content now even (do you hear me, YHL?  Start working on your comeback projects now).  The internet fangirls will throw a freakin' ticker-tape parade.  THEY'RE BACK, THEY'RE BACK!  Let's buy their book to celebrate!

Oh, I figured surely it would be released earlier. Ok, retracting previous statement.

They're still idiots that's for damn sure. Without going into details I'm working with someone now who has a book releasing in December and we're already deep into planning the launch strategy, tour and so much more. It's not in the DIY space but yeah, it's still a business and their book has just become one more thing they do half ass and expect to receive endless praise for enduring.

I think the YHL ship has sailed. The book will sell okay, not great, J&S will do the minimum necessary in their contract to promote it, and they'll toss a couple more Teddy and Clara pics up on Instagram for people to fan over, and then they'll fade back into obscurity.

Thank you lol Thinking back on this, I am pretty sure J&S said they had asked the publisher to push the book deadline back a few times, possibly because they were busy with other things. I wonder if the publisher could have asked them to close everything down and solely concentrate on the book to actually get it done. I feel kind of suspicious about the blog shutdown being almost exactly a year before the book is due to release. I also remember toward the end of blogging, they were putting calls out to fangirls asking if they would let J&S photograph their homes for the book, like they didn't even have all the projects lined up.

Sherry is selfish and delusional enough to purposely make this book a flop, she knows that the fangurlz will eat up whatever she dishes out. If they actually cared, they would have kept up with social media… a post or two a week. A snapshot of the house, decor/diy projects, a video of Teddys milestones, an updated family photo or a public visit with the Bowers. Just like with the showhouse they are probably "whipping something good-ish enough really quickly".

I think one of the reasons they stopped blogging was to focus on Book 2, which does seem counter intuitive.  Maybe their end goal here is to become authors.  At first I thought for sure that the book would flop, but after seeing the reactions their instagrams get, I'm kind of wondering if it will sell really well – absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially when it comes to needy fangurlz.

I actually wondered if they might be splitting up. Blogging seems to put a lot of strain on relationships and I can't imagine a publisher allowing them to back out for professional/contractual reasons, but I *can* see it for personal reasons like a divorce.

I still think they called quits on the blog because they could see their relationship was suffering. And maybe headed toward divorce.

It’s like they weren’t even real people anymore. They weren’t John and Sherry from the block, they were “John & Sherry Petersik copyright-trademark-all-rights-reserved.” They ate, slept, and breathed the blog. They were DIYing and commenting slave-robots.

John was cranky at any criticism, Sherry was glued to her phone. Not fun. I think they were smart enough (and rich enough) to just decide to pull the trigger and save their marriage.

I gotta say though, I don’t think six months in a house with my husband with neither of us working would save my marriage, lol. Is it really possible neither of them is doing any work of any kind? If they were consulting or writing articles or ANYTHING, we would have heard about it. It just seems weird. How much money did they make, for the love?

Cheetah will let her displeasure be known.

That's my thinking, as well.  If they were doing anything at all… something would have leaked out.

They must have squirreled away a shitload of money.

Well they pop up from time to time – I passed Sherry by in an, um, inspiring article on realsimpledotcom called "How to Create the Ultimate Easter Basket", handing out tips with what to fill your 10 bucks easter-paint-can with craft supplies for the young house artist. (Yes! Artsy stuff! This is such an surprise! I know, i know.)

Although I found the tip from another whatever to use a Kånken mini backpack (~60 bucks) as an basket to be far more offensive. (So, Sherry had one of the better ideas. Really. o.O)

Not quite sure what they get out of those mentions, besides publicity. Presumably nothing financial.
