Awwww! Dog photobomb, so adorable! Love the windows!

I like your idea. Personally I'm not a big fan of the gallery walls but I tend to like things very, very minimal and nobody would ever come to me for advice, lol! Would you carry it past the blue? I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use the full wall with the half blue/half white. I kind of like the way you have it now. Hopefully others will chime in because I know I'm not any help. Cool house and you've done a great job! I'm also in Texas (I assume you are) and really, really want to put in hardwood floors.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I was thinking of extending the gallery into the dining area on top of the wall (above the blue paint). Not sure, not sure …

It's always nice to find other Texans on GOMI. Other people tend not to understand the impulse for state-themed art!

I love your apartment!!! So fun and quirky. Dog = adorable (so much cuter than Burger! AH! Oh no I didn't….)

I like the idea of extending the photo wall, and I love white frames too.. Just hung some in my sons room and felt a little ashamed like I was copying YHL…. *shutter*

I've painted my cabinets too. The first time I hired someone to sand and paint them white. The thing I would say about white is it got dirty and when you are used to wood cabinets hiding certain kinds of fingerprints, stains, etc. white cabinets can be a chore. Mine are now painted green. Huscat loves them, I am so-so with them.

WMC, I am going to suggest something radically different for you. Tho I do not like Chris Love Julia as people, I like what they did in their kitchen in house1. The dark blue cabinets, white walls, wood floors and some black. Even the Ikea shelves for over the sink. Or some cool pendant light ( I dont like their pendant lights here tho)

I have green cabinets too! sfun_bananachaplin

Ahhh! How did I miss this? Navy bottoms with white uppers and wood counters is exactly what dh and I are pining to do!

Inspiration photos I've been hoarding:

This was has white counters, obvs, but if I squint I can picture that big wood cutting board as the countertop surface.

This cabs are too gray, but same feels.

This one has blue uppers, but that's easy enough to imagine away:

Phoebe, where did the bottom left (or bottom two?) pictures come from? I've been thinking about white and wood cabs for my kitchen.

I like the Chris Loves Julia kitchen too, even though I don't care for them or their blog chair

Aw, thanks! I like it, but I'm ready for some kind of change in the art department. I think I'm going to take the plunge and do the giant photo wall. If we do it better than YHL, it's not copying …. right? Right?? party0006chin

Hello, hamcats!

You are all geniuses and much MUCH more qualified than the Petersucks for this type of thing, so I was hoping you could help me out. We're in a rental house right now, and the entry/living/dining rooms are all connected. I took a panoramic picture to try and show the full layout. Basically, I've gotten really bored of the white frame gallery (probably because Sherry has ruined it for all of us), and I'm contemplating turning that full back wall into one giant gallery with lots of gold/black/white/dark wood frames (sort of like this in terms of color mixing, if not size). I have a lot of really cool old political cartoons and stuff with gold frames, as well as some colorful paintings on wrapped canvases, and would probably go with minimal artwork in the rest of the room to let that wall shine. What do we think — too much? Too trendy?

Yay for Texans! I'm in Austin, where are you guys (if you don't mind saying, I know some people like to remain anonymous)?

I really like the picture you linked to – there are a few things that I would incorporate from that link. The frames are not lined up vertically or horizontally, which i like better than the more structured way YHL does it. I also like your idea of different colored frames & sizes, that will look really nice (I would even hang the texas art in the gallery wall, I think throwing in stuff like that makes gallery walls more interesting). I would also fill the wall from both window frames. The blue in the dining area stumps me a little – I would either continue the trim & paint the wall behind the tv the same blue on the bottom or I would repaint the dining room bottom wall a lighter color. Since the dining room wall is shared with the living room area wall, I think the paint should continue or not compete as much, does that make sense?

I love your house though – I think it's super cute!

I just saw this on The Lettered Cottage and thought of your wall. Maybe a mirror or some big vintage shutters to break up the part where your blue stops? I an imagine a huge mirror like that would be hard to find, lol! I think your wall is going to need bigger frames like this one. This house is crazy beautiful, but looks crazy expensive :)

We love Austin, have family near there and go often. I'm in a small town, about 40 minutes outside of Dallas.

OK, so we bought a house a while back and have done nothing with the main living areas. It's an open floor plan which is great except all the built ins in the living room and kitchen cabinets are a dark cherry (I think?) wood. I would have never picked it myself but it is quite lovely, I think. BUT I have no idea what color to paint the walls. They are now institutional white. GOMI-WAN, YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE.

If these pictures work, this is what I'm working with:

Kitchen

kitchen 2

Living room

So, while I wouldn't have picked them, I think it would be a shame to paint or replace them since they're nice. But I have no idea what to paint any of these rooms! There is also a dining room space between the kitchen and living room but it contains no cabinets. That picture in the living room is not ours nor is the lamp. Eventually we are thinking of replacing the carpet and kitchen tile with hardwood floors.

Hamcats, please help!

I love this site (design seeds) – they pick things in nature and match the colors

Crisp white (hah) and blue would look awesome. I love Tests suggestion of a color palette.

I love Design Seeds!  In case you're not in love with blues (they're gorgeous, test), here are a few others I fudged.  As an aside – Sherwin Williams Chip It matched the colors from your kitchen to the colors in the blues above very closely.

If I went with the third color palette, I'd stick with a very light wall and bring all the color in with crewelwork on fabric.
