“Marlboro Woman” Goes Member Paywall Only

The Marlboro Woman, the snark and recap site focused on The Pioneer Woman, is no longer a public space. Visitors were shocked the past week to find themselves unable to view posts – instead receiving a message that they would now be required to cough up $20 bucks a year if they want to view the content.

After October 1, 2014, this content is restricted to subscribed members. A 6-month subscription requires a non-refundable $10 donation. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: (1) register as a new user; (2) click the donate button, pay $10 and list the email you used for registration; (3)after payment is received, activation will occur within 48 hours. If you have already donated in the last six months, please email us at: admin@themarlborowoman.com and furnish your name, email address, and the date of your donation.

It will be interesting to see if they do as well as The Feminist Breeder – Gina made her site pay-to-play early last year and claims it has been a roaring success.

That's disappointing. I mean it's a snark site. I wonder if she got herself into legal trouble with the heinous evil that is The Pioneer Woman and has to hide behind a paywall to keep going?

she claims on twitter that this is not the case, but who knows. she recently switched to requiring registration to view the site. I think when she saw how many people registered she figured she could make some money and decided that it would be "donation required" instead of just "registration" required.

MW is the Ree Drummond Nazi of the Internet - Over the top full of herself with her site. I read the MW site often and was amused by some of the posters there - some posters are downright petty or wrong in their criticisms of the TPW. Most of the time it's the same 5 or 6 posting.

I was blocked access to the site advising something about my IP address. Following the instructions, I emailed a request for access. No response - nothing. I did this several times. I did figure a way to access it later but have been blocked again.

MW does exactly what TPW does, blocks any negative poster and/or deletes posts she doesn't like. Yet, MW crucifies TPW for moderating.

The Marlboro Woman site is just not worth my time, money or effort. I'm curious to see how her pay-to-play plan works out....I'm guessing not so good.

While Nancy isn't my style, she knows how to cook, she owned a catering business. Ree is Rich, plain and simple. She bought a lot of advertising, and paid for a lot of stuff out of pocket to make sure she became popular. she's a businesswoman not a cook. Ree's cooking is diabetic slop at best. Ree herself has noticeably put on weight eating her own cooking. For the life of me I don't get her followers or the people who think she can cook. Then again, I don't get people who watch the Kardashians either.

Not knowing much of anything about TPW, I baked one of her recipes for the first time last week after one of my kittens asked for "coffee cake" and her recipe googled as the top result. If the outcome is any indication of her recipe-development skills...oy. It had way too much butter, was not the right consistency, did not bake in the amount of time the recipe suggested, and overflowed the pan in a big nasty way in my oven.

In fact, I would be surprised if there isn't some kind of legal action there. Anyway, good riddence.

Rechelle's problem is that she was a huge fan who was naive enough to believe Ree's schtick, so when she made the mistake of meeting her idol and learning she wasn't all that great the hate went above and beyond. Ree has always made me roll my eyes at how blatantly phoney she is, and I think her fans must be pretty stupid, but Rechelle and MW always made me a bit uncomfortable with how over-the-top their dislike is.

Right. I read her post about her stay at the lodge and she came across as mentally unbalanced in my opinion. Like she introduced herself and opened with "hi my children have head lice haha'" and was actually surprised that everyone seemed shocked that she had come anyway, with lice being contageous and all.
And she b***hed about there not being enough eggs for everyone for breakfast, like big f**king deal, you were INVITED and a GUEST, it is not like you stayed at a hotel. And then Ree obviously had mixed her up with someone else and asked her whether she just had had a baby and she was still super offended like, years later. Completely cray.

Oh and the weirdest of all: in her lengthy post, she started by describing how she even got invited in the first place. Basically she sent really thoughtful presents for every instance Ree would feature Rechelle's blog in her sidebar. And then she linked to blog posts from Ree to show that Ree actually used her presents. Like a necklace with Ree's children's names engraved (and that was long before she had started using their real names openly on the blog) or personalized cups with the ranch's dogs on them.

No darling, wrong again. Let me just clear this up for you dearie. I sent Ree a thank you present for giving me a very deep discount for some ads I purchased on her blog. She gave me the discount because she read and liked my blog or at least that is what she said in her e-mail to me explaining the reason for the discount. The first thank you present was the darling custom coffee mugs I created with the dog photos on them. After receiving the mugs, she gave me another round of very deeply discounted ads and so I sent her the very cute necklace as a thank you - because in my experience this is what good people do. They say thank you when someone does something nice for them. I did not display or announce the names of her children on my blog. I purchased the ads through a third party web site. I never contacted Ree personally until after she contacted me.

Other than being a shallow and generally stupid human being, Ree's greatest crime is her habit of "borrowing" other people's material be it writing ideas, recipes, recipes, recipes and did I say recipes? And then failing over and over and over and over to ever give any credit to her sources. I stand by everything I ever said about Ree. She is a cardboard cut-out of a human being. She has no real imagination of her own but she is a fabulous mimic. I always had reservations about her and was never a "fan". Her writing always came across as strangely empty to me and I never understood her success nor her appeal, but I thought her website might generate a few readers for my own blog so I bought the ads via a third party website. I did not directly communicate with Ree until after she established contact with me

Her demographic is old, fat, dumb, conservative and white. If you don't believe me check out any photos of the crowds at her book signings.

My heartfelt sympathies if this is you.

So if your level of contempt and disgust for her, based on her writing, was that high even before, why would you accept an invitation and even bring your sister along? And then b***h about that stay online? This just shows that, whatever Ree Drummond's faults are, only one of you has any class.
And no, sending someone you never met presents for offering you a good deal on the internet is not what nice people just do, it shows that you were clearly infatuated and it stroked your ego that the biggest blogger of that time would acknowledge you. At least stop lying to yourself, might do you some good.

  8. Is this the new frontier of blogging? In a few years, will all the popular bloggers be requiring payments to see their content?

Also, it's not a "donation" if it's required to get a service, is it?

    THIS! (0)  NOPE! (0)

    • scarletbegonia

It ain't the new frontier of blogging because no one's gonna play for your run-of-the-mill blog. Paying for a educational site, like math tutorials or DIY household tips? Yes. Paying for a subscription for an online magazine, with frequent and varied content? Yes. Paying for corn? Oh, hell yeah, people gonna shell out money for their own particular fetish.

Compare MW to Bill James Online ($3/month). The main topic of BJO is baseball, a popular activity that a lot of people follow obsessively as a hobby, and Bill James is very well known name, hugely influential in that niche. Baseball is a topic that has enough fanatics to support a pay site. Hating the Pioneer Woman...not so much. The few haters that care enough to shell out $20 are probably a little unhinged themselves, unbalanced enough to combust before they can pay for a second year.

Same for more conventional blogs. No one, hatereaders or fangirls alike, wants to read NieNie or the College Prep enough that they'd pay for the privilege. I love the hell of GOMI here; I hope ads work out for PP. I'm not opposed to kicking in something. I'd shell out for gear; I'd give for a fundraiser. But if GOMI went $20/year subscription, I'd have to go look for my snark elsewhere.

When I Googled GOMI today the caption that came up was the quoted subscription announcement and I was like "Whaaa??? GOMI is charging now?" Not that I wouldn't pay to play on GOMI but it caught me off guard!

I saw the same thing! I used to belong to a forum that began charging, and it died a quick death. I would be pretty sad if GOMI put up a paywall.
