You might have seen Eric Hites/FGAA in the news recently for attempting to ride his bike across America (Martha's Vineyard to California) while weighing 560lbs. He's planning to camp along the way, pull a trailer with all his gear and use the donations to his GFM account to pay for necessities.

I blame the Proclaimers I really do. I am riding a bicycle from east coast to west coast for a few reasons, 1 to prove things to my wife and my love. 2 to take back my health and to lose the pounds I have collected over the years. As of right now, I'm 560 pounds. I will be blogging and video blogging the whole trip and interviewing people along the way. After I complete my trip I will write a book on the experience. This fund raiser to help with supplies and equipment and any costs for camping, eating, etc. I'll need all the support I can get.
I've already left for my trip so be following me at fatguyacrossamerica.com

In the past Eric has had several online fundraising attempts. There’s his current GFM which is at just under 11k, as well as a PayPal link he has set up on his blog.

https://fatguyacrossamerica.squarespace.com/support/

Three Indiegogo campaigns:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fat-guy-across-america-the-long-road#/story

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fat-guy-across-america–2#/story

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fat-guy-across-america#/updates

And two Kickstarter campaigns from 2013:

Perhaps he’s been more successful in other endeavors?

My wife and I separated last July for many reasons, money, issues at home etc. both of us were pains in the rear. I was a slob, borderline hoarder that was so over weight and unhealthy, I could not hold or get a job. I tried but, It would just not happen. So instead of working to get healthy, I tried to start businesses at the cost of my parents and eventually my father n law. I got sicker, grew depressed, kept secrets about money and kept things from her. I tried, but not as hard as I should. I should have tried to get healthy but I didn't, I sat there and did nothing. I just let life slip by. I had issues, it was really hard to be my wife let me tell you. I tried to tell myself I was doing my best, but I wasn't. I still did stupid things and made messes and wore shoes inside and spilled drinks etc, etc.

She put up with me forever. Then we started dealing with her families bar, which i had talked my father n law to buy on the cheap. yeah I screwed that up too. I really tried, but my pride stopped me from asking for the help I needed, I loved my wife very much and didn't want her to know how bad a screw up I was, so I left things out. it tore me up. Sure she had issues too, but what people don't? She let me be a jerk for a long time But when it got too much to bear, is when I got lazy and obnoxious, and stopped caring about my looks and health, she had enough, I mean she gave me many chances for straightening up. I didn't.

I think you have to actively TRY to only get 1.5 miles of biking in a day. That's how far I bike to get a beer at a bar with friends. Another 1.5 miles for the return trip. dead

Back in May when he was first drumming up support for this adventure the purpose was a bit different.

The purpose of this trip, is to regain my health, life, family and secure a future when I can compete in the workforce. Things have slipped away over the years and its time to take my life back. I want to inspire other to take the steps to take back their lives and health. On the road I want to regain my connection with GOD and myself. As part of this trip I will be stopping at Churches Every Sunday to tell my story and connect with GOF and fellowship, something I have been missing in my life.

Did he get medical clearance to do this? It seems like a lot to take on for someone who weighs that much.

I tried to read his blog, but the August 20th post had two excuses in the first paragraph alone, and there seemed to be many more from what I skimmed. He's clearly not prepared for this endeavor.

I honestly don't know. The only doctor I've seen him mention is Doctor Who. And whoever treated Angie for her heat stroke/panic attack. At first they claimed it was heat stroke that caused her to pass out but that's been updated to heat stroke + a panic attack due to her agoraphobia.

8/12

Well today started out strong, really hot, but pretty early in the ride we had a medical emergency. Angie passed out from the heat and a heavy hill climb, I loaded too.much into the cart and the climb got her good. Heat stroke isn't fun and it's pretty dangerous. So I called the emt and they took her in to the er and got her fixed up.

vs his blog post on 8/20

We had to stay another night due to storms then rolled out the next morning, about 2 miles into the ride Angie my wife passed out from the heat and got taken to the er and treated for heatstroke and a panic attack. The doctor suggested a few days rest for her. She later announced to the world about her agoraphobia and anxiety disorder and her battles to overcome, which made her a hero in my book for even trying.

Luckily Angie's agoraphobia didn't impact her ability to karaoke!

Jesus…I have never heard of this guy! He sounds like he is grossly unprepared to bike across the country! No medical clearance, no doctors on call to help, no proper equipment (I assume you would get a proper custom bike that can carry your weight if you are that size).

Why would he start in Falmouth?!?

I just mapped his route, to date, and the 12th-24th he just rode around the island? Like why Martha's Vinyard, Tisbury, and Edgartown? It's the opposite direction of California.

This sounds like it's going to be a hot mess…Stasia has been boring me lately and I need a new hate follow.

Yes. Then because he was doing so well on his journey he invited his wife to join him. Said wife being an agoraphobe who hasn't been on a bike in over 10 years. Here's what happened when they were picking out her bike.

So, he's f**ked over his entire family, moved on to the in-laws, and his only wake up call was when his fat wife separated from him for being fat? And giving him a shitload of money will allow him to strengthen his relationships with family, wife, and god?

Nah, dawg, do that shit on your own dime.

You know who I donate to? People on the verge of death from birth defects, accidents, natural disasters. Kids growing up in such poverty that my 5 or 10 bucks allows them eat for a month or more. Educational programs. And so on.

Not some loser who has burned every bridge and now has his hand out to strangers. go_away

So glad to see Fat Grifter Across America here on GOMI!

Sounds like he's on yet another hiatus.

Any guesses as to how long it will take him to get moving again?
