DIY Blogging Chris Loves Julia, practically begging the internet to accept them as YHL’s replacement, were the victims of a “hate session” in their blog comments Friday. It seems some readers finally had enough of the sponsored posts and spoke up. One commenter pointed out that they “had to go back 6 posts for an actual non-sponsored decor post”, while others said they now assume any post is either sponsored or a hint hint hoping for a sponsor. Well on Monday they pulled the Meaningful Partnerships Only card (9 points in Bloggers The Gathering) and declared they will no longer do indiscriminate advertorials. Based on your comments, as well as similar feelings we’ve had recently, we’ve made the decision to no longer accept sponsorships from all non-project related sponsors…Going forward, we will let our plans and projects guide the partnerships we choose. Commenters of course immediately rushed in to assure Julia they will read no matter what, urging them not to listen to haters and complaining about all the hate in the comments from the haters, and included the usual “not sure why people are whining”, “it’s YOUR blog!”, and a few comparisons to Young House Love which no doubt made Julia moisten her drawers for hours. But hey, at least blogs are starting to get it – readers don’t like nonstop advertorials. Baby steps, I guess. Ashlina Kaposta, “The Decorista”, evidently had a bad experience with a moving company. Rather than chalk it up as an object lesson in researching companies before you hire them, Ashlina decided to take to instagram and call for America to close its borders. Maybe I don’t love my furniture like Ashlina…but this just seems like a really extreme reaction to getting robbed by a moving company. Do we really need to end immigration because some brat in Dallas lost her couch?
After returning from their month long break, Young House Love has announced they will be moving on from the blog. [W]e’re immensely thankful not only for your support and kind comments, but also for helping put words to some of the things that we had been feeling for some time. And while the last month hasn’t been enough time to fill in all of the blanks about our future (heck, when are life’s blanks ever clearly filled in?) it has made one thing pretty obvious to us: after seven awesome years of sharing our home and our life, it’s time for our next adventure. They left the window open to return to YHL (so start begging really hard, fangirls!) by saying they “won’t go as far as to declare this the end of Young House Love or our blogging days”, and hinting they may come back when the kids are in school. Day 20 of Curtaingate, the blog walk out that has silenced Young House Love, looms as the Petersiks remain unresponsive to almost all attempts at contact. Nearly 5,000 fawning comments now cover their adios post; there have been no replies to the pleas of “please come back”. The only replies they seem to be bothering with are in response to Legitimate Media Outlets begging them for comment – and the answer is always Sherry declining to discuss the situation. Both the Washington Post and the New York Times got a big ole “I don’t feel the need to explain my art to you Warren” response when they emailed asking what exactly is going on. According to the Washington Post the “e-mail address provided on their Web site gets you an immediate blanket reply (labeled “canned.response” ) that provides links to old posts” though they went on to add: Sherry Petersik did e-mail me back yesterday: “So sorry, we aren’t commenting to the media right now. We hope you can respect that decision and wish you all the best.” I contacted Artisan Books, the publisher of their 2012 book “Young House Love: 243 Ways to Paint, Craft, Update & Show Your Home Some Love” to see whether someone might help me talk to the Petersiks. The answer was no. Sherry apparently responded to the NYT with a simple no comment, and added “we really would like to clear our heads and refocus”. There are at least 10 more days before the “month” of possible break time is over and the internet can perhaps find out what the Petersiks intend to do going forward – or if they even intend to go forward at all. After last week’s Curtaingate, John and Sherry of Young House Love have decided to respond in perhaps the only way they really can at this point. We have been feeling off for a while – like we have lost our rhythm and we’re somehow missing the mark for ourselves and for you guys. We too miss the good old days when we did this for the love and were full of such obvious joy and spontaneity. This felt like a place we all hung out and it just doesn’t have that vibe anymore. Saying running their blog now makes them feel like “every time we pressed “publish” we braced ourselves”, they announced they would be taking a break. We don’t know exactly how long we’ll be stepping away, but our guess would be at least a month. They went on to tell readers they would be “exploring other options for supporting our family”, explaining that they used to actually enjoy blogging when they “had day jobs and did this as a hobby”. They also said they’d be taking a break from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook – “but the blog will stay public so you guys can access the archives whenever you’d like”. Young House Love, professional bloggers, are doing less and less blogging. Well…less and less blogging that their readers care about. You see, after informing everyone back in April that they didn’t even want all this popularity and would be “scaling back” their posting frequency, readers have become less and less gruntled – and that growing irritation came to a head after the Dynamic Do-overs announced there would be only one actual post this week on their little blog bliggidy blizzog. We hoped to have a Thursday post for you guys but this week didn’t go as planned. So sorry! Suddenly the comment section of the post turned into the Hoover Damn scene in Superman. Readers began coming out of the woodwork to call Jdawg and $her unprofessional, with others wanting to know why their diy skills have not improved in the past 5+ years of doing a diy blog. One commenter said maybe if the Petersiks “spent less time monitoring comments” they would “have more time to write another post per week”; many said they felt like John and Sherry just aren’t that into blogging anymore. There were the Team Petersik fanpoodles, of course. But the overall tone of the comments seems to be one of confusion (there’s a whole bunch of “this is your job“), and side-eye (a lot of people wondering what the hole they do with 80 hours of work-at-home time between them that they can’t throw up some kind of quick post). Basically it’s turning into anarchy over there, and this Airing of Grievances is probably giving them the most pageviews they’ve seen since they first typed the words “laundry room”. I guess all that’s left to do is sit back and wait for their slobbering “please keep clicking, folk$” follow up post. Oh come on, you know it’s coming. Katie Bower, owner of a “crack house“, finally gets to use the vague brag beloved of bloggers – a secret project. Saying “spoiler alert not a book!” she then went on to say in another instagram post: “Today was CRAZAY! #camerainmyface #nowiknowhowmykidsfeel”. However, some intrepid hamvestigators found more concrete hints around instagram. It seems KayBee might be doing some kind of video thing for Home Depot’s Home Decorators Collection. Other bloggers, including “The Hunted Interior”, also seem to be part of this #secretproject, so I don’t understand all the wink winking from KayBee. Then again the OMG SECRET PROJECT HERE’S A HINT SNEAK PEEK thing is one of my blogger pet peeves, so maybe the cheese stands alone on finding all of this annoying.
