Lifestyle Blogging It’s been a long, long while since GOMIBLOG mentioned Caroline McCarthy, OMG BEARS, internet fixture, blogger, and writer person. Since that time she has joined and left Google, and then joined Quartz, “a new kind of global business news outlet” (translation: yet another blog talking about tech and business because the internet doesn’t have enough of those). Now, amid rumors in the NYC media underground of what one source called “an office outburst”, Caro has announced her departure from the company: As of last week, I’m no longer there. The reason: After a lot of conversations with our leadership, the consensus among all of us was that it didn’t make sense for Quartz yet to have someone in the role I was hired for. Though she went on to say “I think it speaks very highly of them that they understand when and why something isn’t working” another source claims the real problem is “jackassery at the executive level”, primarily consisting of management being “way too full of themselves” in “many areas”. Why anyone would be surprised by that from executive leadership at a startup tech website is beyond me. Caroline McCarthy declined when asked to comment on this story. Brooke, has a dog named Sugar, has apparently been crying over her dog. Why, you ask? Because her son – who is “a rambunctious two years old, and he doesn’t know any better” – injured the poor thing: The other day, my son…hurt Sugar. He jumped off the stairs directly onto her back. She is a Shih-Tzu and a small dog…After he jumped on her, she crawled slowly until she found me in the laundry room. Her back hind leg was hurt bad, I could tell. She whimpered a little, but she didn’t whine loudly. Even though she didn’t cry out, I knew it was bad. I could tell by the hurt look in her eyes. Obviously Brooke did what any responsible pet owner would do when faced with a whimpering, limping dog – she “immediately called the vet”: We did as the vet instructed and did tests from home to see if her leg may have been broken, dislocated…etc. Since the tests all seemed negative, the vet advised us to ”wait a day or two” to see if it started to get better on its own. Evidently the brilliant advice to sit around doing nothing while her dog limped around the house didn’t result in a cure, because: A few days after the incident, we took her to the vet. She most likely has a cranial crucial ligament tear {which is the equivalent to a human tearing his/her ACL}. The vet said that most likely she will not heal on her own, but we will wait for a bit to find out if she needs surgery for sure. I don’t understand – why does her vet’s advice constantly seem to be “let’s wait”? Maybe I’m just a crazy pet owner, but if my animal was depending on pain pills in order to not be in limping misery and my vet kept telling me to “wait”, I’d find another vet. I sure as hole wouldn’t have waited “a few days” to take my clearly injured pet in for an exam, no matter what a vet said. Ok, am I just overreacting to someone letting their injured dog sit around in obvious discomfort for “a few days”? Is this standard pet owner practice to “wait” when you can “tell” that your pet’s “back hind leg was hurt bad”?
“Bloggers Anonymous“, eyerolls ahoy, is “a new site dedicated to building up other people”. Basically you anonymously submit other bloggers along with a blurb about how omgamazeballs they are. With so much negativity online and offline, why not have a space to celebrate each other? “Bloggers Anonymous” is meant for exactly that. A place to build each other up against the critics that want to bring us down. You know what, this is great! What the blog world really needs is more opportunities for bloggers to rub each others’ tummies. They just do not get enough rainbow enemas in their insular, positivity only, tyrannically moderated world. Seriously, is this site necessary? I’m pretty sure 97% of the internet is dedicated to happy unicorn blogger hugcircling crap. (The other 3% is GOMI.) They already have almost everything other than fawning commentary and I-got-ya-backness blocked from comment sections. They have glitter farting, hooray-for-us conferences. They hashtag twitter with positive ‘movements’ until it looks like Stuart Smalley on ecstasy. Do we really need an entire site to provide yet more validation for these people? Because if so, that’s a really depressing statement about bloggers. Alex, of the blog “Classy As F***”, recently posted about the weird disclosure ethics of sex toy company Adam & Eve. It seems they wanted to purchase a sponsored post from Alex – but once her post went up the company had some issues with her (legally required) disclosure: [A]s it turns out, Adam & Eve aren’t so into having me disclose that it was a sponsored post. I was told (only after it was up) that I was only allowed to say it was a guest post or that it was done “in association with.” Basically, it sounds like they wanted to pass it off as a regular old guest post… It appears Alex wasn’t the only blogger Adam & Eve tried to drag into their shady tactics. A GOMIBLOGer in the forum related their experience with the company, which sounds eerily similar: They emailed me asking if they could write a guest post about their product, which was pretty relevant to my content and the types of things I write about. They said they’d offer me $100. I had never done anything like this but I figured sure, why the hole not. They wrote it, I published it, and at the bottom I included a note that said I was compensated in exchange for letting them publish the post. They said they needed me to remove that, and I explained that it was required through FTC guidelines (it is, right?) to be transparent about stuff like that. They were basically like “yea, ok, that’s cute and all but you have to take the post down now. We don’t want people to think we’re paying bloggers to publish content about our products. But we will still pay you if you just take it down.” So I got paid $100 to not publish a blog post by them. Is this a common practice for sponsored posts now? Or is this just one company trying to get one past bloggers who may not know that if they are paid to post something, they MUST disclose it?
Handbasket Lifestyle Blogging WTF “Notes from the Handbasket” has spent over a year justifying why she won’t leave the husband who totally did nothing wrong in having horrible images of children on his computer. Now that he has been convicted for possession of CSA material, she would like to remind you all that your judgment is ridiculous: Upon hearing about a man convicted on [CSA material] charges, many women declare that if it were their husband, they know exactly what they would do. They would turn him in themselves, they would hold him at gunpoint, they would hate him forever, they would kick him out of the house, they would damage or remove his testicles, they would abandon him without thinking twice, they would never let him see the children again. He would be so gone…Those of us who have husbands in trouble for child p**nography, well, we were caught off guard. We didn’t have time to concoct elaborate plans. And if we had elaborate plans for such an unthinkable day, the unthinkable day trashed our plans. Seeing our husbands in trouble, seeing our husbands facing the worst trouble imaginable–facing unimaginable trouble!–we reacted as if these men truly were our husbands. These were the men we promised to love and cherish. How could we abandon them? These are the men we do love and cherish. She goes on to ask “What if your brother were going to prison? Would you abandon him? What about your father?” and “What if it were your son?” in an effort to impress upon people that it’s not just her husband that does such things. Since this is the woman who is over on prisontalk claiming “[l]ooking at [CSA material], searching for it, enjoying it does not mean the guy is a p**phile” and saying that the “idea that we stop regulating p**n makes sense to me”, I think it’s reasonable to assume that any judgment she is dealing with is more likely simply people trying to make her see her faulty logic. You would think she’d know that a mother saying things like “I have yet to see anything that tells me that making [CSA material] illegal has any effect on the broader world of child abuse”, would obviously cause a few folks to say “if it were my husband I would keep him away from MY kids”. Hey lady, that’s not judgment. That’s called protecting your kids from convicted and known predators. Get a grip and stop trying to pass off your family as the victims of some cruel justice system. God I hate the internet today. BlondeBrunetteTravel, sisters who blog about their travels, are just dying to attend TBEX Dublin in October. As people who have a blog where they talk about travel, they apparently think airlines should give them discounted rates because don’t companies know they have a blog? To that end, they are attempting to publicly arm twist Aer Lingus into giving TBEX attendees the discount they deserve: Hey TBEX friends. Let’s petition Are Lingus to offer good fares to us for the Dublin conference! We were going to try to start a Twitter campaign but, amazingly, they don’t use Twitter (have an unused account). They aren’t on FB either so if you’re on LinkedIn put a message on their company page if you want to help with this cause! In case that’s not enough, they then tweeted this morning hoping to muster up more support for the campaign: While I understand that it never hurts to ask, the blogger habit of yelling “gimme gimme” at companies is getting tired. One hotel rep has privately claimed most companies are “afraid not to comply” with such blogger demands “because they’ll get together with their travel blogger friends and give them bad reviews”. That makes this kind of public display smack of attempting to get travel perks by making companies look like they suck at customer service if they don’t indulge the demands of some random travel junkies just because they have a blog. Registration for “travel bloggers” at the Dublin event is $77 dollars. That’s not outrageous. I think between now and October those who want to go should be able to band together to also split a hotel room in order to afford a coach seat to Dublin. If such a trip is still out of your budget then maybe you can look into attending the Canada event instead. Either way, stop acting like companies owe you something just because you figured out how to hit “Publish”, people.
