Penelope Trunk Knows How To Pick A Husband

Penelope Trunk, marriage expert, is once again telling women how to be married. Trunk is instructing women to choose a husband based on whether they want to work or not. Telling women that they must choose between being a mother or being a breadwinner, Trunk then explains our various options. These options are, in a nutshole: be the breadwinner, marry a breadwinner, or hire a couple of nannies.

If you pick the ‘both people work and hire a nanny’ route, Trunk says “you will need to find a husband who earns more than you” because if you don’t, you will just breed and flee:

Statistically your marriage is high risk if you and your husband are both in the workforce and you earn more than him because surveys show that you will resent him. This is not logical, or social, it is primal. Statistically, you will marry a guy who does not make as much as you and then you will have kids and get a divorce. Because women hate the feeling of out-earning their husbands.

Your other primary option, “Don’t bother with earning money”, still focuses on a husband making a lot of money – because women hate having to do all the domestic work if they attempt a part-time job (“The problem with this scenario is that part-time jobs don’t offer advancement or a lot of money, so you need to be with a guy who will work full-time.”):

You will have to work hard to not get resentful about this. And really, who could blame you? The best antidote for this resentment is money. If the guy makes a lot of money you can hire people to help you and then you don’t have to be upset that the guy is not helping you.

The other solution? Yep, pick a guy with money and just stay home!

…[P]ick a guy who will earn enough so that you don’t have to work. Because statistically speaking, you will not want a full-time job, and you definitely won’t want a job where you have to earn six figures, because that’s way more than full-time.

She includes helpful tips on how to choose a husband based on what you want to do with your life, a decision which Trunk seems to think needs to be made by the time you are 25. Telling women, “There will be people who say you can’t choose who you fall in love with. This is a lie, of course. There are a million people you could fall in love with. If one is impractical, just go find another,” she focuses her ‘how to choose a husband’ strategy on the Myers-Briggs type indicators, which is probably about as reliable an indicator of long-term compatibility as astrological signs.

Trunk does remark that “there is no scenario where you have a big job but do not work long hours…And that is fair: why should you get a big important job and be home all evening for your kids when everyone else has to work twelve hour days to have big important jobs?” which is something I do agree with. But the rest of her advice seems so venal and calculating that I have to wonder exactly how she chose HER husband?

Brit Morin Will Use Your Ideas

Brit.co, the hobby horse website of some chick who married a rich guy, has a habit of using other folks’ ideas and passing them off as her own original content. Well, she’s at it again, this time in such a blatant way that it’s impossible to dismiss.

Brit + Co posted a tutorial for statement headbands that featured a glitter star diy headband:

If this diy headband idea looks vaguely familar, it’s because The Hairpin featured the exact same thing over a year ago:

As of right now there is no “inspired by” or any type of attribution on Brit + Co that would give any credit whatsoever to anyone but Brit + Co. Pretty typical for those hacks, who seem to regularly rip ideas from other people for free, and then try to sell them to other people in a box.

“Fabulously Broke” Thinks Women Can’t Handle “Men’s Work”

Shawanda Greene, of Fabulously Broke in the City, is “okay with offending people if I speak my truth”. Evidently her current truth is that “women shy away from STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math] professions. Additionally, we shun honest, good paying, blue collar” jobs such as “plumbers, carpenters, electricians, fire fighters, construction workers, garbage collectors, and mechanics” because “the conditions in which the aforementioned professionals work are, quite frankly, undesirable”. What are these “undesirable” conditions of “traditional ‘men’s work”?

The work is physically demanding:

Men and women are not equal. It’s impossible for a man to carry and conceive a child. And no one argues otherwise…I’d back down from a bar fight with even the scrawniest guy, because, well, he could probably kick my butt. After all, no one argues that men are stronger and faster than women.

…dirty:

Do you know what my father, a garbageman, smelled like when he walked through the door? You guessed it. Garbage. Personally, I’m not super eager to chip my finger nails, sweat out my hairdo, or catch offensive odors in my hair and pores during a standard day’s work.

…and masculine:

If you work with a bunch of guys, more likely than not, office chitchat will surround topics guys care about.

She wraps up these brilliant observations by stating that “I believe women should expand their options. However, I haven’t totally convinced myself that we’ll be successful in all male dominated professions.”

I’d really like to craft a pithy response to all of these statements but I need to take out my trash, repair my bathroom sink, and write some code, since my vagina has yet to convince me that such tasks are undesirable.

Cary Randolph Recounts The Horror Of Surviving Sandy

Cary Randolph, half a sandwich away from a meal, never misses an opportunity to remind everyone that she’s no longer a wannabe Brooklyn hipster from Missouri – she’s now a top drawer Hamptons going snooty party attending New York City socialite. And like many NYCers, Cary felt the need to share with facebook friends how she survived Superstorm Sandy:

Yes folks, this is how Scary Mandolph eeked out the week of devastation after Sandy. You know, the storm that hit the east coast a couple of weeks ago, killing over a hundred, forcing the evacuation of over half a million, and leaving millions with property damage or homeless. As New York City hospitals lost power and had to move patients to safety, Cary was playing charades and no doubt wondering if her shoes were safe.

Maybe she will do another “what to wear to commemorate a tragedy” post to honor the victims. Or maybe she will just move to the Hamptons and stfu.

Tina Reale Is Really Sad About Her Dog You Guys

Tina Reale, of Best Body Fitness, had the worst Tuesday ever. First she went to the store where she “ended up standing in line for TWENTY-TWO minutes”. This made her late to a parent teacher conference, which “in turn made it impossible to make it to the yoga class I planned on visiting and was looking forward to all morning”.

Her no good very bad day continued when her kids didn’t take a nap and pushed all her buttons, so she ate a bowl of ice cream. Then – THEN – she got a migraine right as she had to drive her kid to gymnastics in the rain.

And then:

When I got home from Makenzie’s gymnastics and let our dog, Roxy, in from outside she took off out the garage door. I couldn’t catch her.

I got annoyed to have to go chase after her with 2 kids in the rain. Then I decided Peter was on his way home and Roxy usually runs around the corner to my brother-and-sister-in-law’s place where she plays with their dog. So, I didn’t grab the kids to go after her.

Peter couldn’t find her when he went looking.

An hour later we got a call from a woman who found her on the side of the road.

She had been hit. The insane amounts of guilt immediately enveloped me like a dark cloak. Someone had hit her and left her, but the guilt still fell on my heart.

Turns out the accident had broken my poor Roxy’s back and caused a significant amount of internal damage. We had no choice but to put her down.

Of course after some readers started to judge her decision to say “screw it” to searching for her dog, Tina decided it was time to do some damage control:

I am thankful for those that know I didn’t just shrug my shoulders when Roxy got out and went about my business. That know the true scenario was Roxy was on our closed deck enjoying a mild, mostly sunny afternoon when I took Makenzie to gymnastics. Since it started raining on my way home, the first thing I immediately did when getting in the house with the kids was to go bring Roxy in. I had forgotten to shut the garage door and Braedon was playing down the hall with the screen door out to the garage and it had opened. Roxy got out. I DID CHASE AFTER HER up over the hill of our driveway and partly down our street where I SAW HER turn down to my in-laws’ house. I COULD NOT keep chasing her because I had TWO CHILDREN I could not leave alone. So, I considered the fact that my husband was very close to being home and he said he would go get her. Yes, I stayed home with my two kids while my husband was out searching. It was not a case of “Oh she’s gone. Oh well.” and I’m thankful for those who know that I would never have that kind of heart towards a part of our family.

See? You just don’t know her. You don’t know the whole story. You just read her blog post and made your judgments based on what she herself said. What a bunch of monsters you are to read what she wrote and assume that was what happened.  Thank goodness that’s all cleared up, and I hope you’ve all learned a lesson about drawing conclusions about an event based solely on what a blogger says happened!

Blogger Agrees That Hurricane Sandy Is Our Own Fault

Jenny, the mommy behind “Toddlers, Teens and In-Betweens”, is “not only very politically driven, but…also very biblically driven”.  Well it seems she decided to pass along “to those that might be interested” the fact that she agrees with Bill Wilson:

Prophetically, the United States is faced with the reality that its leadership has turned against the one true God, YHVH, in both domestic and foreign policy. There are certain consequences. We face a big storm…Currently, the New York stock markets are closed, transit systems in New York and Washington DC are closed. The Federal government is closed. Train and air travel systems are shut down. Some of the most liberal and YHVH-mocking areas of the nation are threatened by Sandy.

The screed, which Jenny found “very interesting and worth sharing”, goes on to insinuate that accepting the OMGgays – “the president endorsed same-sex marriage in Maryland, Maine and Washington (two of the states are in Sandy’s path)” – means we are all pretty much just asking for natural disasters like this to come down on us.

Though she bravely claims in her post that “Too many Christians don’t speak out for what they believe in…..and it’s time”, her defensive followup post implies the feedback may have chinked her armor a bit:

If you don’t like what I have to say, don’t read my blog.  I will not be silenced for what I believe.  I would NEVER wish death on anyone, nor do I think that anyone deserves to die for their political beliefs.  I simply believe in what the bible tells us is coming.

Claiming “I don’t care if I OFFEND you” and telling people “Don’t like that? DON’T read here” means Jenny officially joins the ranks of real bloggers who don’t have time to understand why people may have been offended. Let me help you out, Jenny: In a nutshole, by sharing and endorsing the contents of this message you pretty much told millions of people who are dealing with unimaginable loss and tragedy that they deserve it because America is being ruined by a bunch of liberal gay-rights-loving Obama-electing God offenders. If you still can’t figure out why that might result in some negative comments, then I don’t know how else to explain it. Perhaps the GOMIBLOG community can clarify it for you further.
