Gawker is the Arbiter of All Things Hip

A few months ago this song started popping up in my iTunes on shuffle mode, but I kept forgetting to go back to my computer and learn the name. Thanks to Foster, I now know they’re Phoenix, the song’s “1901.”

Now I don’t know much about Gawker’s Gabriel Snyder at all, so no judgments, but the fact that he discovered Phoenix AFTER Julia Allison does not bode well for his being on top of the masthead.

I mean, I like Phoenix and all too, and not to be a music snob or anything, but I’ve liked them since United. Why is everyone going around like this is their first album?

And what is with the snobbery against French music? There is great music coming out of France. AIR or Sebastien Tellier, just to name a couple.

Nick McGlynn Trapped In Miami

Nick McGlynn is currently trapped in Miami, and hates Delta!

UGH!! 2 Hour Flight Delay!! This always happens at MIami International Airport…
MY FLIGHT WAS CANCELED! Figures… I hate Delta!
Ok, this might be because I just watched Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (again), but I would love it if Nickle got on a Greyhound for his return trip. It would take about three days, think of all the WACKINESS that could ensue! Picture blogging across the eastern seaboard. I smell a book deal!
In the meantime he can email Julia Allison for airport book ideas to keep busy.

New Media Celebrates Itself

Because there aren’t enough elite groups who hold self-congratulatory, meaningless award parties, the new media circle jerk crowd is holding their own “hooray for us” gala:

Peter Feld, last surviving witness of the building of the Statue of Liberty, announced the glorious news on his tumbly thing:

Nominations open for the first annual Obliterati Awards

Next Thursday evening, December 10, at the Obliterati Holiday Spectacular (sponsored by Citysearch and Random Night Out) we will present the first annual Obliterati Awards to honor ten individuals or teams from amongst the circle of people who attend this sort of thing who showed notable professional achievement during 2009. We are looking to recognize people who, besides being our friends, put some real points on the board this year — people who started companies or sites, or had their companies meet some major milestones, or whose work as writers was recognized, or who started or advanced organizations, or who did something else to make a difference.

Nominations should be e-mailed to me. (Nothing formal, just say who and why.) Next Thursday’s Obliterati will take place at Destination Bar, 211 Avenue A at East 13th St, starting at 6pm; the awards will be announced at 8:30 pm. For more details about this party (which is open to all) including the open bar and gift bags, and to RSVP, please visit our event page on Facebook.

So basically Gawker, Tumblr, Mediaite, The Awl, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Guest of a Guest, Random Night Out, and Foursquare are doing a secret Santa trophy exchange at some kind of Behold The Wonderment Of Us party. Being conscious of appearances, they are cloaking their mutual back-patting with a canned food drive. I at least applaud their effort at charity, however.

Be sure to email P-Feld and nominate one of the ten already decided on candidates! Maybe he will come lay across your friends on a couch!

You're Probably Wondering What Shira Lazar Did This Weekend

I know you are sitting around nursing a hangover, or heading off to spin class, but I think it’s really important that you know Shira had a rad ass weekend.

Let’s start oh, how about Friday afternoon:

Just shot an interview at the farmacy- a cannabis collective in westwood. 2:08 PM Dec 4th from TwitterBerry

Of course what usually happens when you put a perky girl in a cannabis farm, happened. 4 hours later we get a Cobain quote:

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.” -Kurt Cobain (via @tferriss) 6:30 PM Dec 4th from TweetDeck

Bahahaha, man that makes me miss college. So, later that night Sheesh goes to the movember gala, and Saturday winds up with a head. ache. The “chocolate rain” guy hoped her headache got better. She had a massage. She read Mashable.

Is she one of those depressed divorced chicks or something? I don’t know, just seems like sort of a meh weekend for a 30 something media empress living in LA.

The Percivals Taking Their Sexy On The Road

Sean and Laurie “Jessica Rabbit sends her fan letters” Percival are gracing Paris with their…all that up there.  Being the considerate sexycrat (that’s Royal Sexiness to you plebes) Laurie plans on covering her awesomeness with a protective Amazingness Deflector.

Oh man, wifey want to wear a mask on our flight to Paris, how embarsing. about 3 hours ago from Tweetie

Of course, Sean, being just a man and a mere husband to boot, doesn’t understand the panic Laurie’s visage could cause in a confined space. Of course she must shield the blameless others from themselves!

I’m going to tell her I want to wear a Halloween costume on the flight, or maybe pony tails, just as silly about 3 hours ago from Tweetie

Make your jokes, Mr. Sean. It won’t be so funny when Laurie sashays into the cabin and all lustful hole breaks loose. Men will offer her anything, their wives will sit in coach and cry, children will be trampled as the crowd stampedes forth to gaze at Laurie.

Let her wear the mask. Don’t make your romantic flight to Paris turn into that one scene from Jumanji with the rhinos going through the hallway. Or the Fall Red Dot Sale at Loehmann’s.

Damn You Mary Rambin

I can’t think of anything bortchy to say about this pic! DAMN YOU!!!!

Ain’t I a pretty one?! My hair was straight before Meghan’s yoga class at Equinox (Weho). That woman takes your practice to a whole new level. I’m a soaking wet mess! But in a good way. On my way home to clean up and get ready for a great day of college football.

I’m just going to say it: she looks way better here than when she’s made up to a mile. She looks fresh and younger than usual. No matter what you think of her as a person you have to admit that without the evening gowns and piles of makeup, she’s a decent looking girl. Between the scrubbed face and the plans for hanging out with Saturday football, she’s almost approachable and normal.
