Internets Jessica Quirk Care Of Coach Shoes, Messica’s faithful foot companions, barely have a chance to dry out between wearings! Wife of the Quirk predictably wore them as part of her ensemble to her widely attended “hey haters I gots a book yo!” party in Chicago this week. The expert on remixing what you already have in your closet wore an outfit mostly created from things not from her closet: I felt beautiful in an outfit gifted to me by Shop It To Me (I found the pieces in my sale mail!) – a Marc by Marc Jabobs dress and Juicy Couture Ring. Thank you! And, of course, the still moist from their last wearing Coach Swampshoes. Am I the only one starting to think those shoes should have their own tumblr already? And maybe a good cleaning? (This lame post sponsored by Well Crap There’s A Hurricane Coming, Better Go Buy Catfood laziness.) The internets waits in breathless anticipation no more: Jessica Quirk is coming to Fashion Week. I was under the impression that tumblr covered hotel/airfare, so does this mean Messica is not included in the tumblr fashion wolfpack this season? Or is tumblr not paying for Rich Tong’s fashion slumber party this time around? Either way we can’t wait to see what awesome coverage Messica provides!
A few of you have been mentioning that 20 Best Twenty – who posted about choosing Jessica Schroeder Quirk as their August “curator” – had a bad time with their comments today. It seems their announcement was greeted with plenty of feedback, but as it was all basically negative, the blog simply deleted them. I’m not sure exactly what they expected as far as feeback, since Messica is basically now the Julia Allison of the style blogger world; any mention or association with her is bound to attract eyerolls and ‘COME ONs’ from the audience. Anyway, this isn’t about this 20 Best Twenty blog specifically, but their rabid insta-deleting got me thinking. I get that all blogs have the right to delete any comments they choose, for whatever arbitrary reasons they wish. What I don’t understand is why these blogs enable them at all if they only want a certain type of comment. If you put something up and it gets crapflooded with comments you don’t want, why not just disable comments for that post, or your whole blog? Why irritate people by allowing them to comment, only to delete it moments later? Not EVERY site needs comments. Some blogs are about putting the info or posts out for consumption, and don’t really benefit one way or the other from a discussion of the contents. What I Wore, for instance, would function much as it does now if the comments were disabled, and probably be less insulting to the readers. In my experience readers would rather not be able to comment at all as opposed to being strictly told what they are allowed to say, or have a comment rejected outright for reasons they don’t understand. I wish bloggers would grasp that it is less heartbreak for the admins and the readers if they just disable the comments if they can’t deal with hearing things they don’t like. Whatever happened to “information wants to be free”? When did it become the norm to censor conversations, and why is it ok to do so? How do people who run these sites manage to leave their homes and make it about in the world without being constantly offended? Comments on the 20 Best post have now been closed, so presumably the admins finally got tired of deleting. I don’t know why they enabled them in the first place without moderation on a post about Messica. Messica Quirk, the “best friend or neighbor” of fashion blogging, had herself a relaxing Sunday posing in fields. No doubt she is keeping it chill to rest up for her continuing What I Want Book Tour and the rapidly approaching Fashion Week festivities. Let’s be real. I don’t usually get so dressed up on a Sunday afternoon, but over the weekend, I upgraded my camera from a Canon Rebel XSI to a Canon 7D. I knew the first outfit pictures I took with it would be this afternoon and I wanted ‘em to be pretty. I also bought a new shirt at the mall. New shirt + new camera = inspiration. Adam and I spent most of the early afternoon driving around (and off on side roads) of Highway 46 going east looking for a pretty back drop. We wanted to make a day of hanging out in Columbus, IN, but almost everything was closed and we couldn’t find any antique stores… Hey we can keep it real here too! In fact, here are a few “real” tidbits from emails sent to us by Messica acquaintances: There’s much, much more, but any more detailed stories might give away identities. We do tend to hear a lot of the same kinds of stories over and over again, however, even from various people who have most likely never met. Then again we all know she’s changed since she found Quirk! I’m sure she’s way nice now! So until she has another totally awesome book party we can scratch our heads over, enjoy this installment of being real! Jessica Quirk, former style expert, is currently on a plane on her way to NYC for her BIG BIG NIGHT. As Sara Zucker, Rich Tong, John Jannuzzi, OscarPRGirl, Jessica Chu, and 200 20-something wanna be style bloggers descend on the DKNY store in SoHo, we remind you all to take care as you walk down Broadway. No doubt the street will be flooded with thousands of people clamoring for a glimpse of the number one world famous person with a tumblr. Sarcasm aside, is anyone else kind of going “huh”? It’s like a two hour mid-week after work event. You’d think if she were such a BFD in the fashion industry that Kate Spade and OdlR could have gotten together and thrown her a big industry shindig on a rooftop somewhere. But nope, it’s just going to be the same 15 people that go to all the tumblr fashion parties and not even a mention so far in any “what to do tonight” lists that are all over NYC – not even the GofG calendar. You know how you have that one friend who acts like her birthday is a celebrity worthy event and talks it up for weeks, and then you go and it’s just you and the same 9 friends you always hang out with? That’s what this reminds me of. Oh well, time to make a guess on what she will wear. I’m going to bet on a borrowed dress from OdlR or something – it’s her BIG NIGHT in NYC and I doubt she will show up in anything less than major designer if she can help it. Or maybe some c/o crap from DKNY if she can’t convince a big label to lend her something. And of course her footsweat soaked, swamp smell Coach clompers. Place your bets now! Jessica Quirk is in the middle of her bi-coastal book bash, meeting her 900 readers and selling books in her c/o outfits. Apparently all this new exposure is bringing out her critics and she just doesn’t have time for your negativity! fashiongrl: I respect and admire your business savvy and would love to make my hobby my career – especially with a book deal (SO exciting). However, I am really missing the originality and pizazz you had when you lived in NYC. Your outfits then were inspiring, a bit out of the box. I bought colored tights for the first time because of your blog! But now, it seems a bit lackluster. I was shocked to see that you wore such a simple dress for your book signing in San Fran. What is different/stand out about that? How can I, as a reader, pull inspiration from a simple dress with barely an accessory in sight? I could go into a store and buy a Kate Spade dress and wear it. I long for the NYC style and the extra special touches from the past. Maybe it’s because with a blog/a book, it puts you on another level, a fashion pedestal. You need to live up to that a bit more. I’m not saying that in a harsh way, but because I want you to continue forward! Please go back to what made your blog so special in the first place. The comment, which has received 6 likes so far, got the standard “I dress for me” response from Messica: Thanks for the feedback! I absolutely understand that not every outfit is going to speak to you, and that’s ok! This is a reflection of my closet and how I’m evolving as a person. I know I’m not the same girl I was three years ago, and I’m not only ok with that, I’m glad! I don’t think that the change in my style has anything to do with the blog or the book, it’s just about me and my life. What makes a ‘wow’ outfit to one gal is going to be different from the next. I can tell you that I felt like a million bucks in a well fitted sundress – regardless of the label. “fashiongrl” wasn’t done, though: But you’re running a business here. I can’t open a cupcake shop and expect it to be successful if I only sell vanilla cupcakes when I used to sell surprising flavors that brought my customers in… You see what I’m saying? It doesn’t matter that vanilla cupcakes are my favorite and what makes ME happy. I have a customer to please as well. Since Messica cannot have such negativity on her profitable famous blog, she finally brought out her version of “this conversation is over”: The only thing I’m promising here is to share my personal style with you. Even menus evolve with time. 😉 Feel free to e-mail me if you’d like to continue this convo! She just can’t bring herself to admit that she got married, moved to the midwestern ‘burbs, and just doesn’t care as much anymore. She would probably much rather be making her “That’s Quirky” general lifestyle blog happen, but can’t let go of the internets fame from WIW. So it’s just excuse after excuse for her growing mediocrity, and when she can’t deal anymore, pulling a Julia Allison “let’s discuss this privately!” And in case anyone wondered why she chose yet another boring Kate Spade dress/Coach shoes outfit for her San Francisco book signing: “Kate Spade New York c/o Shop It To Me”. After taking frumpy to a whole new level for her OMG TEE VEE appearance, Messica of “What I Wore” sat in a store signing books and not really mingling with her readers. And since you’re surely all curious what Kate Spade sigh of a dress Jessica paired with her Coach shoes: Holy cow, Messica! GOT DRESS? The mentions of the party online don’t seem to be full of much enthusiasm. Just the usual “went to a blogger meetup and had a pretentious drink” posts and tweets. I have to say I’m disappointed; I expected thousands to be banging down the door to get in and meet the Amazing Style Expert. San Francisco isn’t Broomcloset so I’m sure there were more exciting things happening (a couple of the attendees mention that the “What I Wore party” was just a drop-by on their way to real events). I’m sure next Wednesday’s NYC DKNY Rich Tong tumblr models Kate Spade dress Coach shoes cupcakes and alcohol party will be huge, though!
